I think VZW is doing something similar with their recent rural GSM acquisitions, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
Alltel runs a GSM network side-by-side with CDMA in several markets as a roaming network providing ATT & TMobile & some other smaller carriers with roaming services in the midwest & south.
