Thinking of switching from Teksavvy to ACANAC for a year

Right now I am thinking of switching over to ACANAC for a year. Dry loop DSL and a VPS account will come to 51$/month for 12 months, the same I pay for teksavvy right now. Can anyone comment on ACANAC's service quality compared to Teksavvy? I really like teksavvy as a company, but for the same price i can get dsl and a VPS with 500gb traffic with ACANAC. They don't support MLPPP , but i am hoping that the ssh tunnel will be as good a solution to get past the throttling. I don't really care about customer service if the connection is as stable as teksavvy has been. With a 30 day money back guarantee and the option to break your contract if you are without service for more than 2hrs per month makes it seem like a pretty risk free deal, but i am a little hesitant about giving 600$ to this company without a little feedback.

I used a free Acanac login and it worked just fine. I'll stay with Teksavvy though.

Does the SSH tunnelling work for applications other than Torrents?

MLPPP bypasses throttling on all levels, so if other applications such as encrypted VPN, gaming or others that are affected, MLPPP will be of use, not sure if their SSH client will be of help there.

I just want to confirm that we do support mlppp, but not officially. We have chosen to use SSH tunneling as the official workaround to the Bell throttle, but you can still use MLPPP.

"Does the SSH tunnelling work for applications other than Torrents?"

Yes, but not all. It will work with most browser and email clients. Do you have a specific program in mind?

Best Regards,
Paul

Is it possible to pay for an extra IP address , log in with plain PPPoE on one and MLPPP over PPPoE on the other?

Your location shows you're in Saint John New Brunswick, Acanac is only available in Ontario and Quebec. Even Teksavvy doesn't provide DSL in New Brunswick yet.

To answer your question, yes, you can do this (with just one login, as long as it's not static IP). But I don't know why you'd want to. Why not just use MLPPP as your only/main connection? What's the advantage of having an unthrottled connection AND a throttled connection instead of just an unthrottled connection?

Well, so far the MLPPP tomato firmware does not seem to run stable on my router+DSL modem. MLPPP seems to work fine in windows, so i would like to revert my router back to DD-WRT and use MLPPP on my PC. This way i can have a stable internet connection with lower latency for my network and an unthrottled connection for my PC.

On ACANAC and can't get MLPPP working with the linksys wrt54g with the modified tomato. It says it is connected by says not multilink. I did get it working once with the windows client, or at least i didn't seem to be throttled when i tried it.

Acanac actually only supports MLPPP on one of their (6?) gateways. This poses a problem for both Tomato/MLPPP and Windows XP, as they currently don't have any way of saying "Don't connect unless the gateway supports MLPPP!" As such, you're going to run into the exact same problem regardless of how you try to connect using MLPPP.

We're going to resolve this in a future version of Tomato/MLPPP (we'll probably push out beta 2 and then start putting this new stuff into beta 3, or call beta 2 final and put it into v3).

Essentially, we're going to include an option to treat lack of MLPPP support as a connection failure. The router will then automatically re-try until it hits a router that supports MLPPP. This will likely NOT be the default option, obviously, as it's only useful if your ISP supports MLPPP on some, but not all gateways. But we want the option in there so that Acanac users can at least get a pain-free experience.

We're currently waiting on Acanac (or eBox if they end up being in the same situation) to hook us up with a test account (admittedly I only posted the request as a reply to one of Paul's messages, hopefully he'll notice) so that we can do testing on this feature.

I also recall that Paul said they're going to eventually get a new domain from Bell and ONLY point it at their MLPPP box; they'll say "If you want to use MLPPP, connect with this username instead of your regular one".

Until then, you'll just have to keep reconnecting until you hit a gateway that doesn't support MLPPP. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you!

well, hopefully either a v2 b3 firmware will be out, or acanac enables mlppp on all 6 gateways before my teksavvy log in expires. Right now i am using it to get mlppp to avoid having to use an SSH tunnel.Gotta love people willing to donate their time and effort to make the internet usable again.

so far i have not been able to connect using mlppp. I have connected to the following 6 gateways and none have supported mlppp. I have tried over and over to connect to the one gateway that supports it but with no luck. I don't think i would have switched over if i had known that mlppp does not work. Hopefully this will get fixed in the near future.

Gateways that do not support MLPPP:
67.212.8.1
67.55.10.1
67.55.1.1
67.55.16.1
67.212.20.1
67.204.0.1
