Connecting Linksys WRT160N to sympatico 2701HG-G DSL modem

I recently subscribed to Sympatico 7mb service for my cottage but I want to get improved wireless n range offered by Linksys WRT160N wireless router. How do I hook up WRT160n through Sympatico Gateway 2Wire 2701HG-G DSL modem. The confusing part to me is that the Sympatico DSL modem is also a wireless router. What settings have to be changed to allow Linksys router to provide LAN and wireless internet? Advice appreciated.

You have two scenarios you can explore.

1. Assuming Sympatico's 2Wire 2701 can be configured in Bridge mode, you can disable it's wireless, hook up one of the LAN ports to the Linksys WAN port, configure the connection type for PPPoE, enter your b1 user ID & password, and the Linksys router will manage the connection, and the 2Wire will simply act as a bridge modem.

2. You can disable the DHCP server on the Linksys router, set it on the same subnet as Bell's 2Wire (I assume 2Wire is 192.168.2.1), so Linksys could be 192.168.2.254 so its far enough out of the DHCP range of the 2Wire... You could then access its web interface and still change the wireless settings. You would hook up the LAN port of 2Wire to LAN port of Linksys.

Problem is the Bell branded 2wire modems are severely crippled. You can't put it in bridge mode and it's unlikely you can disable DHCP, the only thing I can suggest is you connect the 2wire to the WAN port of the linksys and set the DMZ to that address.

I just installed a Bell Sysmpatico Gateway 2701HG G, replacing a Speedstream 5200. All wired and wireless connections go through a Linksys Wireless-G router. The 192.168.2.1 URL seems to be blocked by the Linksys, therefore I have not configured the 2701HG at all. Its wireless light is not on. I assume that I am using the 2701HG as a simple modem. Is there anything wrong with this? Could I get better wireless perfomance from the 2701HG than the Linksys? (ps. the modem location, because of the short telephone wire, is more awkward than that of the Linksys)
Thanks for any help

I have the same modem and a Linksys WRT54G router. What I did was go into the 2wire bell modem, disable the wireless and disable the DHCP. Then connect port one of the 2wire modem to the internet port of the WRT54G router. Setup PPPOE on the linksys router and voila! everything ran just fine.

When I first connected my linksys router to 2wire modem/router device I was still able to access the interface of the 2wire router because technically my linksys router was just another node to the 2wire modem, and under the DHCP info on the linksys router I had a 192.168.x.x address and not a wan address. This could complicate things if not setup properly. Which is the reason why I configured the 2wire router/modem to act as a modem.

Wow, that's pretty much what I'm trying to do with my TP-Link modem (I made a post for this); however I can't get it to work...

Good call theprof

Another way is to keep 2 wire as is, make linksys router as other than 192.168.2.1 subnet
eg. 192168.3.1 or 192.168.1.1
Then when you connect with puter set it to linksys connection only.

Another way improve your signal and speeds is to use only 2 wire router with high gain AP sending antenna

»wireless.gumph.org/articles/home···mni.html

Then get 100 to 300 Mbps wifi cards for your puters. I find routers run a bit hot with these but they work much better and faster. You will also have much better range so you can go fishing and still get access to your 2 wire in our boat
