 | Slow Speeds/Disconnects I've noticed recently that i'm getting slow speeds (5-7mbits on my 15mbit line) and frequent disconnects, last year we were getting pretty close to 15 and a good solid connection, i spoke to a friend who has GWI and he also noted that he's getting disconnects as well, i've got the same modem as last year, same wiring, nothing inside has changed, the only difference between this year and last year is Fairpoint now owns the CO, and the phoneline that this DSL account is on is now GWIline instead of Verizpoint.
Am waiting to hear back from GWI, but wondered if anyone else had seen these issues in the Bar Harbor/MDI area. |
|
 | No problems here in Rumford. Try calling GWI again. |

 | reply to mhochman1 Well, i fixed the speed issue, I am still having some disconnect issues however. it seems pretty random, and the disconnects are brief, usually only 30 seconds or so, but long enough for IM's and the like to get disconnected.
the guy i talked to at GWI did some testing and said everything was fine on their end. but i may give them a quick call back at some point, Its probably my equipment, but better to double check with them before i tear my whole network apart. |

| You might want to check the Modem or whatever it is, zhome POS, mind works very poor and is to hot to touch, it smells of burning plastic. They will not let you use your own modem nor give you any way to see the con fig in there toy, so you do not even know what speed, line noise ,s/n etc.

 | reply to mhochman1 it's a siemens. runs warm, but not hot. |

Also you can get into the Siemens to see all configs if you know how one word -flash- cough cough, just find a image for the modem theres lots of them out there. |

| I will try my d-link again. I have a westel 6100 I replaces with the d-link when I was on verizon, straight swap, worked 10x beter then the 6100. The dlink will not pull an IP addy from gwi so I have to use in in bridge if I want to use the wireless, but then the wireless is not encrypted so I do not use it at all, just the crap one that gwi says says to use. It will not work except with the little toy one they send, as for trying to get help, "Call US" now, is all I seam to get, I have told them every email that I can not hear so calling them is of no value, yet it is the answer every time, So please Tell me the setting you use to make a different modem work. I have a westel so tell me the setting so mine will work. Thank you for any and all help Bruce |

| Yes In fact if I but it in Bridge I can use the 802g, but it will not pull an ip from gwi, I think they might bind the connection to the mac number, I do not wish to attempt to clone the zhome mac number to the d-ling as this might piss them off,and I see no need to do anything unusable I pay for the account and should be allowed to use what I want, but this may be against the tos, of which I have not seen. It really appears, and I have thought hard about this but the only answer I can think of is they do not want their costumers to see the specks on the stats page (it just seams very odd the refuse to allow you access to something as basic as that.On a side note I have had it sense April and it stills smells of burning plastic.
Thanks for your time .

My name is Erick and I am a teamleader for GWI Residential Technical Support. A number of thoughts on this one:
1) We do not bind the connection to a MAC number. A residential account can have as many as 5 different MAC ID's on a connection to get 5 different IP's on our service at one time. You shouldn't have to clone the D-link modem's MAC ID.
2) We consider ourselves a liberal company and do not consider cloning a MAC against our terms of service. It is your account to use as you wish as long as your not doing something illegal, interfering with other customers or using residential service for a business.
3)If you would like to use your own modem you can do so.
Finally, if your modem has a "burning plastic" smell than it should be replaced. If you are having trouble getting this done via email than you can use our on-line troubleshooting form:
Let us know in the ticket that the modem smells like its burning and that you cannot be called back. We will gladly send you a new modem. |

1 edit | Thank you for the reply, It appears I am stupid as I can not get any of mine to work on Gwi, but again thanks for the answer, as for replacing the modem, I do not want an other one like this so whats the use of wasting the time, all you will do at the most is send an other one of the same old same old. When it stops working I will then play your 20 questions game and time wasting questions so that you can repeat your scrips over and over.Feel free to come and pick it up or perhaps set up one. If the poster who has his working could let me know how he did it ,then I can send you yours and use a good one. again It really appears, and I have thought hard about this but the only answer I can think of is gwi do not want their costumers to see the specks on the stats page (it just seams very odd the refuse to allow you access to something as basic as that.
Thank you for your time and trouble. Bruce
Again this post is off topic but there appears their is no forum per say to start one.
side note You lost me on this part"It is your account to use as you wish as long as your not doing something illegal" I do not like the condemnation you are trying to make PLEASE feel free to monitor before you aledge or infer I am doing anytime wrong or I am tryig to use my service for some nefarious reasons. |

 | Good afternoon Bruce,
It's Erick from GWI again. Thanks for replying and letting me know where things stand for you.
In regards to making the other modems work, please try this
1. Set the ATM PVC to 0/35 (That's what we use on all our equipment). Sometimes instead of an ATM PVC, it will ask for the VCI and VPI. The VCI is 0 and the VPI is 35. 2. If this doesn't work for you, try resetting it to the default and completing step #1 again. 3. You can set it up as either bridge or router your choice
Replacement Modem
Let me see what we have in stock. Sometimes there are other options. With the "burning plastic' smell, I think that we need to swap it out sooner rather than later, even if it's only for another zhone.
Modem Stats
I'm going to open an online ticket for you and I will get you your modem stats. We don't actually change anything in the zhone to "lock" customers out. They ship to you as we receive them from our vendor.
Allegations
Bruce, I was not inferring, implicating, or even hinting about how you use your GWI connection. You are a valued customer in good standing. What I said was meant to explain that GWI only puts those two restrictions on how our residential customers can and do use the Internet through our service. I'm sorry if you took this as accusation it was in no way meant to be that.
You'll have those modem stats before the end of the night. Please let me know if you have any other concerns.
Regards,
Erick |

| Good Evening Thank you for the settings, I read the reply a short time ago, I removed the power and the line cable from the modem. I am not aware of the time needed for the dslam to release the ip so I will Waite till 3AM tomorrow and apply your setting to a d-link and hope for the best. One reason I also wanted to see the specks has proven one of my fears, you have me on interleave I would like that change to fastpath that may help my speed to go above. »/testhistory
This is not 15, perhaps with interleave change to fastpath and my own modem will make it run as well as the cp. Allows. Thanks for your time and effort. Bruce |

| reply to ErickGWI By using your setting the d-link will work in bridge mode only, this renders it a dumb modem and now I can not access the d-link to turn on or change anything nor see any specs. This places the d-link almost as useless as the zhone, on the Bright side speed appears better with the dlink.
15 mintes later I went to a person across the street and placed the d-link on his verizon worked just like it should.yet when I place it on my gwi and use any setting BUT bridge it give a gateway of 0.0.0.0 say specks are good just no conductivity to the world, could you give me the secret gateway address? It does not get one by renew/release. I am sorry that I somewhat hijacked your thread, I was not trying. Just suggestion that you check your modem as the problem may have been there, I was staying on topic till then. Again sorry it was your posts not mine. Bruce |

I have it working, the setting I had to use are: VPI/VCI Category Service Interface Protocol State Remove Edit Action 0/35 UBR mer_0_35 nas_0_35 MER Enabled
It wanted mer, or at least changing the setting make it work, Setting it to atm by its self did not get a gateway. Now it appears to.
