roc5955Premium join:2005-11-26 Rosendale, NY | RE: Time Warner Cable To Stop Offering Newsgroup Access Well, we could all get together and file a class-action suit to either get them to bring back the usenet groups as part of their Internet service, or charge us less for incomplete Internet service, yet advertising Internet service, and not advertising limited Internet service. When I hear an advertisement for Internet service, I presume that it is the WHOLE Internet, and not just the part that is profitable to the ISP. I am sure that others will agree with me on this.
Usenet is the main way that we get Linux support, as well as support on a myriad of technical issues. Without it, it is not the Internet. -- "Understanding is a three-edged sword." |

| Yep throw around that work Lawsuit a few times. Get one brought and watch your cable bill go up because of it. Someone has to pay for it all. And you bet it won't be TWC paying for anything.
And what is TWC gonna give you? $5 off your bill or $5 off Giganews?
Stop being cheap and just pay for one. They are not required to give you news groups, email or any of that as long as they provide you with Internet access their holding up to their end of the deal. A connection to the internet. It is in no way limited by any means. They are just being smart and limiting what is costing them more to have than what it is worth for the few people that actually use it. |

But if they give you a 'connection' and it is only for http (web) traffic, and not nntp (newsgroup) traffic, or other protocols that are used on the Internet, it is NOT a connection to the "Internet," but a connection to the World Wide Web only. If they start filtering traffic, as we do here at my job, they are not offering a connection to the Internet, but merely affording people to use their network to access the web. It's not the same thing, and if the advertise that they are offering the Internet, they had better offer the WHOLE Internet, not just parts of it, or they should state that they are offering LIMITED Internet service. This would be deceptive advertising, and that, my friend, is against the law! -- "Understanding is a three-edged sword." |

| I love my usenet binaries. But frankly, I was shocked that TW switched to the unlimited, uncapped (although speeds steadily dropped), outsourced newsgroups server and let it go for as long as they did. I can't even imagine the amount of data that has been leeched from it over the last year or so. I know I certianly took advantage of it.
Usenet has the potential to be an extremely bandwidth intensive service when configured this way. Third party companies offer usenet access at reasonable prices. I don't see why TW needs to foot that bill. I really think people who are interested in usenet binaries should just pay for it.
That said, if we are going to do things like this to try and level the playing field with regards to the heavy users and light users, I would like to see everyone enjoy a price reduction to reflect the savings. |

There are thousands upon thousands of protocols in use on the Internet. Do you feel that TW and every other provider should be legally required to run a server for each and every one? |

Not offering free newsgroup access and blocking NNTP are completely different animals. |

So in your mind it's okay to leave off IRC and FTP too? You now consider the Internet to be HTTP only?
