| 12 months same line problem
I am hoping that someone here can give me some advice on possible next steps. I had AT&T's 6mb DSL extreme and it works fine 85% of the time. The problem is that whenever it rains in my area (could be down the street) my DSL signal starts going up/down constantly - looking at the log it's about 30sec between the DSL-down and DSL-up indications, which tells me it goes down and as soon as it's up, it goes down again. All the phone/power/cable lines in my area are underground and this area was built-out in the mid 70's.
I battled with them a few months ago and had about 10 different "techs" out to my house over a 4 month period - in the end the local manager that I had out to my house asked me if I could call him when it's raining at my house so he could send a tech to see the issue. I found this ridiculous at the time, esp as it was now December and rarely raining. As it wasn't raining much, my service was working fine.
WELL... now (June 08) the service has had more problems as we are getting rain more frequently and it has also begun to have the same problem when there isn't any rain in the area. When there is no rain it is very intermittent however - not the constant up/down as when it's raining. It seems that wherever the bad link is at, it's gotten worse.
I have begun another attempt at getting them to fix this problem, but with no real hope.. I am hoping that someone can tell me other avenues of complaint that I could try to help me to resolve this. I don't want to switch to Comcast at $70/month for just internet when I currently pay $90/month for internet/localphone/unlimitedlongdistance. I like the localphone's reliability and for my house-alarm. I was with 8&8 for 2yrs.
OK.. hope someone can give me some options. | | spiderflag2000

| I work for AT&T DSL support and the last person I talked to with this problem, there was a leak at the NID (outside box). But that may be only a 10th of the problem. 6 meg service works great---in places like Mississippi and Kentucky. In Florida, it stinks. If you stay in a highly populated area, you will never get the full extent of 6 meg service. The best you'll get is 4 or 5 meg because there are only a certain amount of ports that can use so much bandwidth.
My suggestion to you would be to one--get a tech to check for a leak at the NID. Possibly homerun a line (dedicated phone line in basic), and possibly downgrade your service to 3 meg. Another suggestion would be to get a new modem because our older ones do not handle 3 and 6 meg service well. Make sure your filters are working properly. Thats about all the advice I can give you. | |
