[FireFox] Why does FF3 make it so hard to pick other search opti

May I suggest that the browser is nowhere near being done until the Mozilla Foundation drops its favoritism to Google and allow users to pick their own default search engine? And that Microsoft ought to be among those choices?

Google got what it wanted. Internet Explorer has no default search engine. If you upgraded to it, IE used whatever search choice was already established on your computer. If you did a fresh install of XP or Vista, then you had to choose your search provider.

Yes, there's an option to add other search engines. At the end of the drop-down box, there's a Manage Search Engines choice that eventually leads you to this page. There, you can find Live Search among the other 23 choices. But as there aren't that many choices, why not add them all to the search box?

I submit that search is an important part of the browser development process that shouldn't be left as a choice made based on how much money Mozilla can earn. It should be done in a way that best benefits the user. That means:

* Let the user make the initial search choice
* Provide a variety of search tools right within the box

Fix it, Firefox. And Google, help them fix it by ensuring that any provisions of the secret contract between you and Firefox are altered to allow for the consumer choice you're so happy to espouse should happen in Internet Explorer.
To be fair, Mozilla should make it easier to pick a DEFAULT search engine other than Google. But the biggest hypocrite is really Google who speaks one way where IE is concerned, but does the opposite for FF.

Re: [FireFox] Why does FF3 make it so hard to pick other search

This is a gripe? Please.

As your link has stated, it's not difficult to choose another search engine.

IE defaults to MSN and the, ahem, 'Search Assistant'.
Firefox defaults to Google.
In either case, changing to something else is hardly a tough thing to do.
On any list of priorities of things to change in Firefox, this has to rank near the bottom.

But suggest away, if that's what pleases you and the author of that link.

As soon as the original author falsely claims IE "has no default search engine," I lost whatever minor interest I had in this blog filler.

How much easier could it be, just click/click and it's done. I have installed 40 search engines and whichever I choose becomes my default.

There's even some for IE7.

It is easy.

Click drop down select different engine.

The author must not know that two clicks is not a struggle.

It must be a conspiracy that's the only explanation

I saw this and just had to reply (even if it is old).

a) Google PAYS Mozilla to be the default, this is known information, you can even find their tax returns online showing the income from Google. There are even rumours they paid half a billion to remain the default in the latest version.

b) ANYONE can create one and add it, FF reverts to the last one used when you close and then re-open, effectively making it the new default.

Manipulating the little people for corporate gain is what capitalism is all about. Great, isn't it?
