Compared to how many for EV-DO 3G?
Apple could have made a CDMA iPhone, RIMM somehow manages to support both GSM and CDMA. |

| The could have... but they want the exclusivity (i.e. can sell for more $$$ if they hype it, and make special data use agreements) Also, its much easier to to make 'just' a GSM quad band (good for almost any country in the world) and add on 3G vs. a CDMA phone which has a much smaller following:
From cdg.org # 438,400,000 CDMA2000 subscribers (1Q 2008) # 96,930,000 CDMA2000 1xEV-DO subscribers (1Q 2008)
From GSMA »www.gsmworld.com/news/press_2008···31.shtml GSMA Press Release 2008 3 Billion GSM Connections On The Mobile Planet Reports The GSMA
Roughly 6 times the amount of users. -- Canada = Hollywood North |

| Apple originally spoke to Verizon, according to several sources (it's all technically rumors and unofficial, but common enough that I believe it)... But it's all about control for Apple, and Verizon likes control too... I suppose it's not surprising that didn't work out. |

| Everyone wants control... its just how willing they are to negotiate for a deal. AT&T gave up a bit of control for the ability to get the iPhone and all its hype and users that come with it. Verizon might not have been willing to meet at the spot that Apple wanted. -- Canada = Hollywood North |

VZW sit down with apple, listened about their terms, wadded up THEIR terms and said no thanks. I heard another rummer that Sprint wouldn't even return any calls. Got this off some apple blog site way back. I think apple just put too many restrictions in place and at least the CDMA guys said no. Smart? Dumb? When it comes to a phone driving the market, then why do people bitch with their bills are screwed up, they drop calls or they get some moron for a CSR on the phone and spend 3 hours trying to get a 10 dollar credit? I about laughed my ass off over the remark about the few cities that will have coverage.. so funny. |

| if they are so great then why the need to buy Alltel? Verizon has to keep justifying the dead end of EV-DO by propping itself up with numbers. deep in the dark recesses of a verizon boardroom somewhere, some exec is still being repeatedly kicked in the balls for letting the iPhone thing slip away. but it isn't his fault, it is the dead tech. The iPhone is going global and it will without a doubt seal the door on EV-DO tech and the CDMA provisioning model.
in this day and age, you should not have to ask your carrier to switch phones. |

How ? ? ? I've had 3 portable phones since going to only a portable phone in 1994, THREE:
Nokia 280 something Audiovox 9000 Audiovox 9100gpx
Four total, if you count the original 8900 Brick Phone that stated this account in the late 80's. I also at that time had an installed unit in the car.
I have zero plans to change phones in the near future.
A phone is not a fashion or cool thing. Its a tool to accomplish a task. Make and/or receive a phone call. Plus now days its the equivalent of an alpha pager with SMS. I've sent so few SMS messages from a phone I could count on one hand and probably have 4 fingers left. Receiving I get plenty from various alerts on equipment to other things that would only a few years ago went via alpha page.
If it has to be bright pink and play music when it rings, and be so compact that the design impacts the RF performance, then its a useless tool.

CDMA can have an equivalent to the SIM, called a RUIM »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Removable_···y_Module
Unfortunately that means giving up control that US carriers are unwilling to do. In that fact I will not disagree that the US market is messed up.
Cool and cell phone go hand in hand with cool and work. Pick one. I pick work over cool every time.
The cell phone fashionista have done more harm to the cell phone market than good in the long run.
