Power Outage In Fort Wayne

The Hoosier State has been pounded with terrible weather lately. Monday was no exception. It waa so bad that the electricity went out just after 5:30 PM.

Well, we've had brief power failures in the past and we expected this to be no different. Wrong. I located our portable radio kept for such an emergency, but the NOAA station only had the weather. Finally, one of the local radio ststions said power was out over a large portion of the city, but that's all they knew. No other station had more than that. Just after 7PM, we decided to go out to eat, hoping to find a restautant open that wasn't too far away.

Unfortunately, we didn't get out of our neighborhood, the traffic signals were out and the traffic was backed on the major thoroughfares in the area. So, back home we had sandwiches and tried the radio again, checking local TV audio on the UHF band (something we won't be able to do next year). We heard no news about the storm, but if the power was still on, we might have been able to see it scrolling across the bottom of the TV.

So, we called some people we know, but they were in the same situation. Knowing our one noncordless phone was working on the battery backup, we didn't use it much.

Finally, close to 1 AM, the power was restored. But, for over 7 hours we were frustrated by not being able to find anything out. There should have been a way to keep us better informed. I still don't know exactly what happened, but I'm glad the power is back on. Mark F

Well the local goverments have the option to have an alert/message broadcast via the NOAA Weather broadcast.

What I don't get is why don't they use it?
