Apparently everyone on my street was having this issue. After about an hour of troubleshooting and being on the phone, they found the issue. Apparently one of the 4 nodes coming into the neighborhood was out of service and for some reason all of our modems where still trying to connect to that node instead of rolling to an active node. (this is what the tech said the people on the phone told him, he did nothing at the site.) So they moved us to another node , we restarted the modems and everyone was up and it is still working 24 hours later.

ExSRUser : I am in McLean, VA 22101. Cox is our internet provider. Same problem. Intermittent internet connection, until 6/9 when it was lost completely. We also use VOIP so we lost our phone too. I called tech support three times (with long wait each time) on 6/9 and I was told our problem started on 5/23. My cable modem lost signal dozens of times on 5/23 and it was getting worse as time went on. On 6/9 my modem lost signal thousands of times until it stopped for good. The earliest time I could get an appointment for a tech to come would be three days later, on 6/12. At the same time, my wife is looking for a job and it has been extremely frustrating when she was talking on the phone with a potential employer and the phone was dropped. We had been thinking it was the problem with the phone company (and working with them) but now we know it was the internet. She also can't use emails and respond job postings online. With all these, it will take them three days to come and check. It is soooo frustrating ....

LordPye : I'm in Annandale and Im having similar issues. Cable TV is fine but the internet has been out completely for us since 6/1/08...no outages reported, no anything. Our connection was in and out a lot before 6/1 and then just shut down completely. Now the cable modem never even comes online at all. We've had a tech out (he was here for 3 hours) and couldn't come up with any answers, so they sent a work order for a maintenance crew to come out and check the lines outside...that was a week ago, still no crew has come out. It's terrible. The CM light on the modem has been flashing since 6/1 and repeats the message "NEver Found the Downstream from CMTS" on the error log every two minutes. On your CM Info screen, is your modem failing to lock on a downstream as well?

[VA] Intermittent internet problems - long post

useport80 : hey all, i need some help :(

i am located in herndon, virginia, 20171 and since the tornado storms last week, my internet connection has been intermittent.

original cable modem: dlink dcm-202
original router: dlink dir-655

i called on wednesday and spoke with a phone tech and they said there wasn't an outage in my area. my cable modem would get a signal then drop and repeat this process over and over. we rebooted the cable modem numerous times. i reset my router and even took my router out of the picture my plugging my computer directly into the cable modem. the status light on the cable modem would just flash. no luck. we went through a long troubleshooting process without any resolution, so we setup an onsite tech to come out to my house for saturday afternoon. i even went to advanced tech support and got a case # and what not. still no luck. most of the time the techs couldn't even see my cable modem as being online. i asked if an outage was in my area and they said no each time. i asked if any1 else in my area was experiencing problems and they said 10 out of 40 cable modems were offline. some people might just turn off their cable modem so that didn't lead me to think there was an outage. cable tv was fine. i even tested my cable modem with 3 other coxial connections in my house, one on each floor, and they all yield the same results.

on thursday, i decided to go buy a new motorola cable modem and a dlink dir-655 router to test if my equipment at home was broken. after plugging everything in, i called cox so they could add the new mac address for my motorola cable modem. no luck either. the cable light on the cable modem would just sit there and flash. so its not my original cable modem and router. so i remove all the new equipement and reinstall all my old stuff and naturally its still not working. cable tv was fine. i checked all my cables and checked the patch closet in my garage. i noticed a bunch of splitters but everything was tight and ok.

so friday, i goto work then come home at 6pm and everything is working fine, with my original equipment. woot! 3-4 hours later i decided to call cox to cancel the onsite tech appointment scheduled for saturday afternoon. i talked to the phone tech and she said that i should keep my saturday appointment just in case i have a problem again, so i said ok and kept the saturday appointment. the internet worked fine through the night until saturday, around 12pm. cable tv was fine.

saturday: my appointment was for 3pm. i wasn't at home but my wife was home and said everything was fine in the morning. i received a call from cox around 1:45pm and the cox rep said "the outage is done. is everything working for you?" i said yes everything was working fine(i wasn't home tho). she then said she would cancel the onsite tech appointment at 3pm because the outage is over and everything is working fine. so i said ok thats fine, cancel the 3pm appointment. so around 5pm on saturday, my wife calls me and says the internet connection is down again. so i call cox immediately and they basically couldn't do anything over the phone and said there was "NO outage". they assume something is wrong on my end, even tho it was working with my original equipment. so i had to setup another onsite tech call for tuesday(6/10/08). when i got home at 7pm everything was working fine again. woot. odd. stupid intermittent problem. cable tv was fine.

sunday: everything worked fine, had no problems or slowness issues at all. at around 7pm the same thing happens. i connected my laptop directly to the cable modem and i was getting a 10.x.x.x ip address. eventually i got a 68.x.x.x and everythign worked fine.

monday morning: my internet dies again and is still off as i type up this post. so i call cox again and they saw my cable modem online for a short while but said my cable modem is offline again. the tech said there aren't any outages and everything is fine. odd. my mom who lives in annandale just called me and told me her cox internet is out as well.

so is there anything i can do? my wife and i work from home a lot and since all these problems we are unable to do so.

this is so aggrevating. im pretty technical if u have any tests i should try.

any1 have any tips or hints?
