The digital gateway service here is $5 and includes a multitude of Discovery Channel services, Noggin, Natgeo,Pentagon, various religious and shopping channels, plus Music Choice. So, there is programming whcih I assume is not free so the charge is passed on to customers. »www.cox.com/arizona/cable_lineuporiginal.asp »www.cox.com/arizona/cable_tiers.asp. The dvr software isn't free for cox.
Like needforspeed said if you don't like the fees drop cox. |

| reply to BillRoland said by BillRoland :I keep seeing these statements that Cox and other cable companies are rolling in the dough from box rental fees. Indulge me, please, on how you came to that conclusion? If we assume Cox buys an HD box for $300 (and no, whatever price you saw on eBay is irrelevant because as others have said, the box is almost certainly stolen or defective), and charges $5.95 a month for me to rent it, it would take me over 4 years to spend the $300 it would have taken to buy the box. Is that really being ripped off? Not to mention that if the box develops any kind of defect, I simply have to take it back to Cox and they'll exchange it for whatever the newest thing they've got is. Is that also a rip off? I'm sorry but I can't see from a logical perspective how we're getting ripped off. Not only that, why aren't you all screaming and hollering about DirecTV, Dish Network, Verizon FiOS, and AT&T U-Verse? They all require boxes as well. In fact looking at Verizon's FiOS box rental rates, they're higher than Cox's in my area. I think some of you need a dose of perspective. $4.00 "Digital Service/ Digital Gateway" (What "service"? I already pay for all the digital channels separately)
$11.99 "DVR Service" again what "service" is Cox providing there? I'm already paying to rent the DVR box and it had a hard drive -- programs are recording on the box I rent not somewhere at Cox.
Oh like exchanging a box is something special... I need to pay $40 for them to come swap it for me or spend 2 hours driving all the way across town (Cox's only location is 20 miles roundtrip for me) and wait in a long line only to get another crappy box that's going to continue pixelating my recordings and live TV. Comcast will come to my house free. I went to their office, its 5 minutes from the house or maybe 2 miles. They didn't have a box with HDMI so they set me up with a normal HD box and setup a free appointment for the next day to swap the box.
Compare to Comcast $3.99 box fee $5.99 DVR fee. That's reasonable.
Also you can't compare any prices using Cox's website... they don't post all the fees... there are hidden fees that are not listed there.
said by Barsoap :
I agree that the rental charges are insane, but more insane than even that is the 'gateway access' fees. Doesn't Cox prefer that we use digital service? If Cox ever does away with all of the analog transmissions, will we still have to pay for digital 'gateway access'? Note that satellite providers don't charge an atomic fee for access to their digital transmissions.
I probably could handle getting bent over $35+/mo for DVR fees, but bending over twice for 'gateway access' is just ridiculous. And I'd bet if I tried to pursue cablecard access, Cox would resist it all the way and try to talk me out of it somehow. If you get a cable card you still need to pay the BS fee for "Digital Gateway"
And yes if you find a cable box with CableCard and its cablelabs certified Cox has to activate it on their service. I really don't understand why they can't activate standalone boxes... something about the encryption is an excuse I always hear. -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

At least cable tv isn't necessary to live. If only more people whined about gas and electricity prices maybe things would change. |

I was with my daughter and thank God she was with me last week, I know it wasen't just me that heard $10.00. Now today the girl says yes you can install them yourself and it will an extra $6.00 something a month for the digital. I said "Even when the starts?" I had no idea we we're going to be changed extra anyway. I told her I just wanted the basic cable. No extras. I swear I keep getting different answers every time I go in. Matter a fact the second time I went in a guy or sales guy said"Get the Goverment coupon for the converter and you'll get ALL your channels". I said"All my cable channels?" He said "Ya". I said to' myself, don't think so". Sue maybe you should take a pen and a pad next time you go, or ask for a print out of the pricing. Might make it less confusing and you will know exactly what your getting, and how much you are paying. |
