| [Speed Problem] Line drops, and sync speed is way low for 6mbps.
1) Which AT&T DSL Package do you have Basic (768kbps down), Express (1.5Mbps down), Pro (3.0Mbps down), Elite (6.0Mbps down)
Elite
2) Which modem brand and model do you have? (if Speedstream 5100, does it have 4 or 5 lights)
2Wire 2701HG-B
3) Are you using a router? If so, provide the brand and model.
None.
4) Is your PPPoE login info (username & password) entered in the modem, in your router or do you use PPPoE software?
In router.
5) Describe the lights on the modem when the trouble occurs.
The "Internet" light turns off, but the "DSL" light remains on, then the router reboots as if reset.
6) Confirm that youve checked to ensure that ALL devices plugged into the wall jacks serviced by your DSL phone number (except the DSL modem) have filters fitted.
Everything physically connected has remained the same.
7) Confirm that youve powered off the modem and started it again and whether or not that made any changes with your problem.
Yep, reset several times.
8) Do you hear any type of noise on the DSL phone line or any other unusual telephone symptoms?
None.
9) Provide line stats as follows
Broadband Link Summary Statistics Detailed Statistics Configure Local Network Status Statistics Device List Wireless Configure Firewall Settings Detailed Information Advanced Settings Troubleshooting DSL Diagnostics Event Log Network Tests Upgrade History Resets Advanced Syslog Settings Provisioning Info Configure Time Services Configure Services Static Routes DNS Resolve Traffic Shaping Link Manager Detailed Log ATM Statistics Broadband Link Statistics DSL Down Up Current Rate: 3616 kbs 768 kbs Max Rate: 3616 kbs 1100 kbs Current Connection: Current Noise Margin: 6.0 dB 17.0 dB Current Attenuation: 42.2 dB 26.0 dB Current Output Power: 15.5 dBm 11.9 dBm ATM Cells Errors % Transmit: 5045 0 0 Receive: 24569 0 0 IP Bytes Packets Errors % Transmit: 220223 989 0 0 Receive: 1140495 1076 0 0
10) If you have a speed problem, use the AT&T Speed Test here -- »helpme.att.net/dsl/speedtest/ and post your results.
Your Throughput
Download = 2.793 Mbps Upload = 658.11 kbps
The connection through this modem used to be ~4500 or so, someone said (like a year ago), it's supposed to be a tad bit higher than that.
The connection has been solid since Summer 2002, and as the speed increases progressed, I upgraded when they became available. I'm starting to feel that I'm being capped, perhaps?
Anyone care to take a stab at this?
Thanks!

Brian, that is a modem train down, not an AT&T cap. Maybe one of your microfilters has gone bad or someone has removed one or re-installed one incorrectly.
You can check all of them or try testing your line at your NID: »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »How do I check modem stats, synch rates & speeds at NID - Residential Housin. If the sync speeds are normal there, then you would have to find the bad filter by process of elimination - remove all phone devices and their filters and add them back one by one and re-syncing the modem, until the speeds go bad. | | Repressed

| reply to bmb408 You are at 100% capacity. and holding at 6 DB noise Margin. these line stats as reported by the 2 wire are unstable and will produce slow line speeds, and slow speed transfers. also there is not a Current Rate 3616 speed profile issued from DSLAM. Your Current Rate should be 6016. this lines Current Rate is being reduced. Agreed, check filters and look for any other phone line connected devices like Satellite settop boxes, security systems or automatic gate systems. Do you know your loop distance? I have seen 6 meg speeds work up to 8000' from the CO but a safe range is 0-6500' its possible your too far away from the CO to get Elite, DESPITE the business office selling it to you. Greater than 6DB noise margin is needed to maintain a constant Handshake with the DSLAM. Yes i can see these line stats producing line drops. disconnect all phones and take another ATM Statistic look see if it makes any difference. | | bmb408

| Supposedly, I'm ~1400 ft. away (RT went up Spring '02). I was seeing 4500 over the last year, and dropped down to 3k within the last ~3 months.
I'll double-check all my filters tonight.
No house alarm, no cable boxes/sat. boxes, nada. Just phone and dsl on the lines. | |
