There are any number of reasons for posting a photo other than a critique, and that is what I believe the OP is getting at. If I choose to use the Gallery for nothing more than to show my friends here what I did last weekend, I don't need a damned critique of whether or not I should have used a smaller f-stop or faster shutter speed. After a while, that crap can get just plain annoying. Whether you realize it or not, there is a difference between commenting on a photo and critiquing it.

Still, I do see the other side to this. Some people do post to the Gallery for critiques. In the DI forum, you can tag a thread [CritEditY] or [CritEditN]. All the OP is really asking is that a similar option be extended to the Gallery. If adding that option is too much work (though I doubt it), then doing what I previously suggested should be considered.

Pretorious : I've never understood why a completely separate gallery identical to the one that now exists hasn't been created years ago just for these very reasons. This second identical gallery could have all the same categories as the existing primary gallery now has (landscapes, portraits, art, sports...etc) with the only major differences being no commenting, no voting, not even any features to even be able to do any of these things, just a well organize separate gallery for sharing and viewing only and leave the primary gallery as it is for people to post in should they actually want critiques, votes and comments. I mean come on, it wouldn't be that complicated to do! One extra directory containing sub-directories to separate the different categories, no features or options to comment or vote, problem solved! Those who want only to share their work with other photographers, family and/or friends post to this secondary gallery and those wanting information, critiques and votes and opinions simply post to the current gallery as it is. One extra rule could be added to post a given image in one gallery or the other only, and never the same image being allowed to be posted in both. IMO this has been an ongoing and growing problem for a very long time now and is increasingly becoming more brutal and offensive to many every day. Many great photographers has even left here and/or stopped sharing their work because of all this.
And while I'm at it I'll say this, also IMOHO of course, it's a damn shame so many people here and on so many other photography sites and galleries sit and carefully study every photo under a microscope for even the slightest hit of a flaw scratching their asses and making mental notes and can hardly wait to explode with critiques and brutal comments about how this or that could have been better or should have been done in a different or better way than the owner themselves seen fit. For Christ's sake doesn't anyone ever just admire and appreciate an image and enjoy it for what it is anymore, how the photographer meant it to be and appreciate the hard work and efforts he/she put into it?
--
My other Gallery
And yet another

It's not just those that frequent the DI forums that upload to it. Just going through the first four pages there is a pretty good number of people I don't recognize. I'm willing to bet that a lot of them could care less about getting a critique, but don't realize that allowing comments means both good and bad. Maybe a little reminder that appears on the page after you click the "Upload your pic now" link would help. That should help with those that aren't regulars and only occasionally post to the Gallery. Now for us regulars that do want to allow comments, but don't aren't really looking for a critique, clearly state so in your description, and if your wishes aren't respected, let the mods take deal with it. I don't want to hear an nonsense about the mods having enought to do. If it's to the point that it's that much of a problem, then the offending parties really need to be dealt with in a much harsher, and possibly more permannet, manner.
Gizy : While I agree with that in theory, I don't think it's fair to have to use voting to get comments. Many of us don't feel the voting is a good indicator of feedback, but actual comments are. The two are not necessarily tied together.

The gallery has multiple functions. If one of them is to share images just for the sake of sharing, why can't there be some kind of indicator on the posting? If it's already there for requesting critiques, why not one showing the critiques aren't needed?

*sign* although I personally think that there are many who will ignore the request for no critiques.

SandShark : I'm playing devil's advocate here, so please don't take this personally, but wouldn't it be just as easy to post "Critique Not Welcome" in the picture comment section before the photo is posted or in the comments section afterwards? Either way, I don't think it's going to dissuade an individual from voicing their opinion.

I don't have any statistics to back this up, but I imagine a vast majority welcome comments, good or bad, as long as they're not hateful and mean comments. I won't name names, but there are some individuals who could be more tactful and sensitive when they cut down someone's work. Their people skills are extremely lacking, to say the least.

Edit - Replaced some adjectives.
--
Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas; it is a creative art. - Ansel Adams

New Gallery Button/Option

Brainless : Ok, to start out with, I am posting this here in the Imaging Forum and asking a mod to move it to the New Feature Requests Forum. This way the people here in the Imaging forum can follow the link and know of this posts existance. After all, it effects them and they should have a say also.

This has been an issue that we have fought over since the Gallery was formed. Someone post a photo in the gallery and someone feels they have to "Critique" it. The original poster gets upset, the feud begins, it spills into the Imaging forum, people get pissed, threads get locked...etc. Personally, Im so sick of it, I threw up 4 times back.

A while back, we implemented the "Critique Invited" option in hopes that this would solve it. If you wanted a critique, you chose this option when you posted your photo. This didnt work. Now you get a critique weather you ask for one or not.

Personally, I post to share my photos. I dont want a critique. I want a new button/option. I want it to say "Critique Not Welcome". I think this is a simple enough request. I dont feel it is offensive toward anyone. It will be a personal choice. And Honestly, I think it is way over due. This problem has gone on long enough. The other option (critique invited) is clearly not working. Hopefully this will solve the problem.
