| [Xincom] Earthlink PPPoE doesn't work
After problems with my Earthlink DSL, which are now fixed (it works fine if I am connected directly to the modem), I am having trouble getting that connection working on my dual WAN Xincom 502 router which uses both the Earthlink and a Comcast connection.
I have put the modem (Netopia 3341) in to bridge mode. I am not sure if my VPI/VCL needs to be 0/35 or 8/35, but I've tried both.
With just my PC to the modem, it works in bridge mode, but as soon as I connect the modem to the router (which has the same settings I'd been using before for EL), it won't connect. There is some problem with it negotiating the PPPoE. The status for that WAN shows as disconnected next to the PPPoE connection type.
If I click to connect, I receive the message "Cannot connect to the Internet. Please check connections, or username & password. !". I have checked all of that and it seems to be correct. If I click the details button next the disconnected status for that WAN, it says "PPPoE negotiation in progress". No matter how long I wait, that doesn't change.
Any ideas what to look for? Please be very clear and specific as I really don't know enough about these things.

| When you hook up your Router, you no longer use the Icon in Windows to connect (in fact you delete the Wan Miniport connection and Broadband PPPoE Connection Icon) as neither are needed as just the LAN connection is used to connect to the Router and the Router connects to Earthlink through the EL Modem using the Router's built in PPPoE. You simply go into the Router at it IP address using your browser and set it up with your Username and Password.

| That is exactly what I am doing (I know what to do as I've been using this setup for years -- it was just changed to test the EL connection which hadn't been working).
I have isolated the problem though. It seems that my log on info is "stuck" in the modem (I thought that gets removed when it is put into bridge mode) so that EL thinks I am still logged on with that info.
When I put a different email address (I have a number of EL ones) into the router it connected to EL immediately.
How can I get that log on out of the modem? |

| Are you using IE 7 as your Browser? If yes, the UHP Modems don't work properly with IE 7 and you would need to use a different Browser like Firefox or Opera instead.

| Yes, I'm using IE 7. Do I need to use an alternate browser just to get the modem to stay in bridge mode or all of the time?
I've been using IE 7 almost since it came out with this modem in bridge mode, but the modem was already in bridge mode before I upgraded the browser.

| It is not sticking (saving the changes) because of IE 7 not allowing the commands to be saved in the Netopia memory. IE 7 does not work with the UHP Modems and there is no fix.
Yes, you have to either install, then use a different Browser as I posted above or you have to use a different PC that has IE 6 or another Browser installed on it.

| Yes, as you were using it before, remember? You only need a different browser for saving the new settings. It is fine to have multiple browsers installed. I have IE 7, Firefox and Opera all on my system and they don't interfere with each other.
So you can install Firefox (my suggestion), make the changes and just leave Firefox installed but unused until you need to work with the UHP Modem in the future. That way, you will go back to use IE 7 after you get the settings fixed.
