whizkid3 : Since he's going from LGA to JFK, tell him to skip Manhattan and the time budgeting it will require. He can see Queens from one end to the other by cab. (Unless he has a boatload of luggage to haul from one to the other - Surprise!) He should bring a watch and time the run.

JFK has the really long wait times (not LGA); so I suggest he get there 3 hours early - not a second less. Allow one and a half hours for the scenic ride. That means he has two hours to burn along the way - plenty of time. During the trip, he can ask the cab to wait, but they won't want to. He can pay them and let them go; or not pay and see if they stay. (You're well within your rights not to pay if a yellow cab doesn't want to wait for you.) If they leave, simply hail a yellow or Gypsy cab. (A Gypsy cab is a usually black, Lincoln town car. Queens, especially in this area is full of them.)

Have the cab take him down 94th St. through Jackson Heights; right on Northern Blvd through Woodside; and left on Broadway - traveling down Broadway through Elmhurst to the end Queens Blvd. Pass the intersection of Broadway and Roosevelt Ave and pass under the elevated #7 subway line (while passing directly over the E,F,V,R,G subways lines which follow down Broadway at this point. This is a good stop to get out and take in the atmosphere (and perhaps some Mexican food or a hot dog and beer.) All along Broadway, he can stop in all sorts of stores, bars, restaurants and see the real New York. Then continue on through East Elmhurst to Queens Blvd and make a left. Queens Center is a huge shopping mall right there, but he won't have time. Make a right on Woodhaven Blvd with Rego Park on the left and Middle Village on the right. Again, stores, restaurants and bars - this time a little more upscale for the first mile or so. If the time is right, pop into Killarny Cabin or Woodhaven house for a pint.

Then pass St. John's cemetery on the right. Resting place of at least 20 famous mafiosi including Salvatore 'Lucky' Luciano, Joseph Profaci, Salvatore Maranzano, Joseph Colombo, and more recently, John Gotti.

A few more blocks and you're entering Glendale. There is a Home Depot on the left, if you need any last minute power tools. Go over the viaduct. If you plan in advance, you can eat in one of a few great German Restaurants here. A quarter mile later you'll pass the former NY Fire Department communications bldg from the 1800's. (From back when they communicated by telegraph, and then drive through Forest Park. He can stop and have a picnic if he wants. Or have the cab take a loop around the park (to the right). You can drive through it and it has some awesome views of Queens and Brooklyn (depending on the foliage). Just past the park, you are in Woodhaven. You can stop on the corner of Jamaica Blvd. You'll know it by the elevated J and Z subways lines passing over. Good Indian food a few blocks down Jamaica to the left in Richmond Hill.

Back on Woodhaven Blvd, going south, drive through Ozone Park and pass Atlantic Ave taking in the sights. Perhaps a short stop at the busy intersection where Woodhaven, Rockaway Blvd, Liberty Ave and Cross Bay Blvd meet. Here you'll see the elevated A train passing overhead as it travels down Liberty and then splits into two branches. Lots of ethnic atmosphere of all kinds here. He could make a right on Rockaway and go a few blocks to place a bet on the ponies at Aqueduct race track. (Unfortunately, racing season has moved to Belmont and doesn't open again here until the Fall.)

Past Rockaway Blvd., Woodhaven Blvd. becomes Cross Bay Blvd. Its about 1.4 mile on down until you pass Toring Park on the right just before Conduit Ave / Nassau Expressway. Here is where the amount of time left comes into play. A left on Nassau Expy., puts you right into JFK International Airport. If he has time to kill, he can stop at Toring Park and take in a little league baseball game. Or even better yet, continue a few blocks into Howard Beach and get a great slice of pizza as KCrimson suggested or even an Italian meal or desert in one of the many Italian eateries on the left and right.

Or if there is still an hour left, continue on down Crossbay Blvd. He'll see the canal on the left and some of its grand (new) homes. A few blocks and you hit the causeway over Jamaica Bay and through the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Then you'll hit the sleepy village of Broad Channel with its boats and houses on sticks. He'll swear he's in a fishing town in New England. There is a great bar hear next to the Fire House. Another half mile and he's in the Rockaways with the road ending at Rockaway Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. Some quick work on his tan and another beer?

Time to turn back. Fly back up Cross Bay - its only 10 - 15 minutes to your terminal in JFK (unless its 5PM - 6PM; could take 1/2 hour). There you have it. He's taken in more cultures and ethnic food then you can find in all of Europe. Or a phenomenal bar hopping trip. Or just the best Pizza this side of Brooklyn.

Or he can go the usual cab route between airports, and spend three hours in traffic on the Van Wyck Expressway - its his choice.
