| Flood of Biblical proportions
The Cedar River is and will be flooding 2 to 3 feet or more over modern record flood levels set in 1993. Emergency management does not know what will happen. All but one bridge will be closed in Cedar Rapids. It is unknown what the effect on the remaining bridge will be. The Cedar River bisects Cedar Rapids. The east and west sides of town may be cut off for days.
The water levels and discharge are nearly off the charts already and the Cedar River crest is expected in the next couple days at Cedar Rapids. More rain is expected today in the Cedar River basin.

| reply to drslash The city of Cedar Rapids is implementing evacuation plans based on a 500 year flood. Many utilities are being turned off in the downtown area. The previous modern record flood level in 1993 was 19.27 feet. The current forecast is for 24.5. Check the above links for levels and forecasts. The 500 year flood height is 26.5 and emergency management is warning that it may hit that level. It is raining today and heavy rain is expected the next 2 days.
This is going to be Cedar Rapids worst natural disaster ever.
Please say a prayer for Cedar Rapidians. -- Save water...drink beer! |

how is the water going to get from Cedar Rapids to Indiana?
We're DOOMED!!!
Edit to add: I spent a great deal of time in Ioway in '93, I remember how devestating the floods were in Des Moines and along the mighty Miss. I hope that everyone in the affected areas is OK. -- »www.otadigitaltv.com Frank Shoemaker would call this noise |

| reply to drslash A few depressing updates.
The downtown of Cedar Rapids is under water. There has been loss of power at one of the water pumping stations and the city is at 25% water capacity. A railroad bridge has been washed away. Cedar Rapids has received a couple inches of rain today with more coming. Hundreds of homes and businesses are flooded. I-80 is closed southeast of town and will be detouring on Highway 30 which is only 1 of 2 ways to cross the Cedar River. I-380 was closed briefly through Cedar Rapids but the traffic was a nightmare. I-380 was reopened but one lane in each direction must remain clear for emergency vehicles. The gauge that measures the river height is broken or has lost power. The river height will need to be measured by reference points. The river crest is not expected until tomorrow morning.
Fortunately I have not heard any reports of loss of life. The evacuation plans have been carried out very well

| reply to drslash The Cedar River through Cedar Rapids is over 29 feet and is expected to reach 32 feet! The 500 year flood level was 26.5 feet. The is beyond belief.
Rescue shelters are being cut off due to flash flooding in other parts of the city and surrounding communities. This is due to today's heavy rain. There is some more rain coming tonight.

| reply to drslash Thankfully they had a flood plan - CR will rebuild just like all other cities and if they are like Dayton they will keep some part of buildings that show the water level.
it may take a bit of time but they will rebuild. Back in 1913 I don't think Dayton had any kind of evacuation plan - over 350 died and lots of fires: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Dayton_Flood -- Brian

| Yeah, as another Daytonian, we can sympathize. If you look at where the "old money" is in Dayton, it is on top of a hill overlooking the city where the wealthy rebuilt after the great flood. The entire Dayton landscape now reflects the rebuilding efforts with a system of levees and flood control structures that double as some very nice parks.
I had this discussion years ago regarding a "100-year flood" at the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency...they were trying to get us to engineer a project to "protect against any possible flood." We eventually convinced that that there is no way to predict a "possible flood" and reasonable designs coupled with a catastrophe response plan was the best route. -- All hail JoePa |

| reply to drslash I have been dealing with this in my small town in Wisconsin, populationa bout 10,000. I have been pumping water from my basement for over 24 hours now. I have lived in this town all 29 years of my life and have never imagined the devastation I have seen so far, thankfully my pumps are keeping up, my finished basement is ruined, but that is the least of my concerns.
I posted a couple of pics in this thread.

| reply to drslash An additional number update. The total number evacuated in Cedar Rapids came to 25,000.
There are now hopeful signs: The water is receding. At about 24 feet down from over 31. Still 12 feet to go to get under flood stage. CR is up to 50% water capacity. There has been only one death in CR so far. It was not a drowning but probably a medical condition complicated by the issues of flooding. FEMA is beginning to take assistance applications due to federal disaster declarations. Check points are set up to allow brief re entry by residents for minimal property recovery and damage assessment.
Clean up will begin in the next few days and rebuilding in the next few weeks. -- Save water...drink beer! |
