davet join:2001-05-19 Louisville, KY | How to turn Netgear WGR614v5 into wireless access point I'm considering getting AT&T Broadband. It is my understanding their modems are also routers. I have a WGR614v5 router that I'm using now with Insight. I would like to keep it up and running since my Tivo and Wii also connect through it. Is it possible? Do I just have to turn DHCP off in the router to make it an access point? (Also posted in the Neatgear forum) |

| There is an alternative to using your existing Netgear router as an access point. Turn the AT&T supplied modem/router into a simple bridge modem.

I use my Westell 6100 modem/router in bridge mode and do the PPPoE with my Linksys router with no problems. -- We can never have enough of nature. We need to witness our own limits transgressed, and some life pasturing freely where we never wander. Test your firewall. |

| reply to davet Yes, simply turn off the DHCP server in the Netgear router and use the LAN ports. Unless you have a reason to use the Netgear router, the AT&T-supplied router will work just fine.
Also it makes troubleshooting the connection easier. You can access the modem config pages and also if you suspect the router is causing problems just connect it directly to a PC vs having to re-enable PPPoE. AT&T tech replaces the modem, or resets it to defaults for whatever reason just plug it back into the Netgear and your connection will keep on working fine, no need to reconfigure anything. -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

| reply to davet Are you married to this Netgear router for some reason?
Do you now have or are you going to order AT&T Local phone service?
I don't know what the deal is on modems/wireless gateways with FastAccess DSL Direct (FastAccess DSL without phone service).
Pricing Terms and Conditions >> Promotions and Rebates
AT&T® Home Networking >> Order online and receive a FREE wireless gateway after rebate.
The 2Wire 2701HG-B Wireless Gateway seems to be the currently shipping Home Networking Wireless Gateway.
What modems are shipped & supported by BellSouth? Which should I use?
2Wire Info
The 2Wire 2701HG-B can also be put into Bridge mode for use with an after market router.
. .
Your probably asking why should I get a 2Wire 2701HG-B Wireless Gateway when I already have a wireless router?
1. The Motorola 2210-02-1006 is not worth $75.00 as all of the other AT&T regions can get the Motorola 2210-02-1002 for $50.00 and there is not a dimes difference between these two modems except for the firmware. It's not worth $50.00 either. It's worth about $40.00 on it's best day. Don't get me wrong though the Motorola 2210-02 is a great modem, but it's just not $75.00 worth.
2. They are both FREE after rebate as long as you meet the qualifying conditions.
3. Both of them can be put into "Bridge" mode for use with an after market router.
4. The AT&T Southeast Help Desk will fully support the 2Wire 2701HG-B Wireless Gateway and they are not going to fully support your Motorola 2210-02 in "Bridge" mode with an after market wireless router. You will have to disconnect your Motorola 2210-02 from your after market wireless router and reset the Motorola 2210-02 to factory defaults and then directly connect it to your computer for Help Desk support.
5. Lets say that for some reason you don't get your rebates. Maybe you forget to send them in. Would you rather pay $75.00 for a $40.00 modem or $100.00 for a $80.00 wireless gateway?
6. It looks cool and comes with a cute little stand that will let you set it up on it's side. |

davet join:2001-05-19 Louisville, KY | Thanks for the info. The only reason I would want to keep the Netgear is because I have set up my notebook, Tivo, and Wii to connect to it. I have a SSID that I don't broadcast and a passcode to try and keep the intruders from connecting. Is it possible to set up the 2-Wire the same way with the same codes so I don't have to redo the other devices? My Insight cable is still slower than a snail on Quaaludes and I have a tech coming on Tuesday. I have a feeling he won't find anything and if that is the case, I'll probably be making the jump to AT&T DSL. |

You could use the standard modem it can be configured to work just like your cable modem, with that configuration you would not need to change any settings on the netgear.
