There's a definite speed increase when dealing with the javascript-heavy sites such as Facebook and Digg. 9.27 started to slow as Digg, especially, added their new comment section. Now, on 9.5, it flies! Love the new scrolling too. Easier on the eyes
Am I missing something? What's new about the scrolling?
Something is different with it. I don't know if it's faster but it's definitely not what it was.

v9.5 is extremely fast!

However... on my Windows 98 First Edition systems, each time Opera is now opened, a warning message occurs indicating the msimg32.dll file is either missing or an older version that could cause problems properly rendering transparency effects. The message then suggests replacing the file with one from a Windows ME disk set. Unfortunately, that could conceivably be a fast-track that descends into "dll Hell", since other dll's linked to msimg32 might also need to be updated as a result, and their dependency dll's updated as well... and so on, down into the abyss.

So far, I've encountered no problems with rendering any of the sites I've tried... but the warning message each time I start up Opera is a pain... you have to manually clear it to let Opera load. There needs to be some way to allow/direct Opera to ignore the msimg32 version for those willing to live with any rendering problems that might appear from time to time. That, or there needs to be some positive assurances (based on tests) that a specific later version of msimg32.dll will work with Windows 98 FE with no unpleasant dll side effects. My version is 5.00.1693.1.

I've submitted this to Opera as a bug, but I'm not sure it really falls into that category...

Well, I'm glad to see they've finally fixed a handful of small but rather annoying problems I kept running into, especially the .gif animation speed. However, I'm still running into two bugs- one old, one new.

- Web page icons are not being saved on my favorites.

- The address-bar history will not update. I tried clearing it out and now absolutely nothing goes in it.

Anyone have any ideas on these two?

Anyone noticed that with 'Auto Dropdown' unticked in opera:config, typed url's are not saved but when its ticked they are.

Also when you are selecting an url that is already in the dropdownlist just by clicking on it, it doesn't come up to be the first url on the list anymore. It does, when you type it in manualy... So over the time all your most visited websites end up at the end of the dropdown list. Very Annoying.

Opera 9.50 puts this whenever it starts in Win 98SE. Apparently I have to hunt down some Win ME version of msimg32.dll and maybe gdi32.dll to get rid of their warning.

(edit)
For anyone else encountering this, a link to the WinME DLL is available via the Opera forums: »my.opera.com/community/forums/to···d=236172

I don't see opera config to disable auto dropdown. All I have is tools> preferences and it doesn't show anything related to auto dropdown

There's an interesting collection of Widgets available. You can also download torrents from within the browser, no plugin necessary. I'm sure I'll be discovering much more as I find time to goof off!

I will now convince my wife that this needs to be the default browser on our XP box (this one is Linux Mint 4.0).

(Raising my ice-cold, adult beverage)Cheers!

Got any numbers/tests for that or do you just perceive it to be faster?

HOSTS file issues

Click for full size
The new Opera 9.50 may not play well with any site that resolves to localhost IP 127.0.0.1

»my.opera.com/community/forums/to···d=226872
quote:
If you are using your hosts file to redirect to 127.0.0.1 (localhost) then you are encountering a new security feature that blocks public servers from loading content private servers as part of their documents.

In my case I've seen the browser be very unpredictable, occasionally allowing a localhost URL but often just silently refusing to open it. It's raising real havoc trying to do web development where the web server is running on my own PC. This Opera is also unpredictably not connecting to a proxy on this machine (also a localhost specification).

I can appreciate what they were trying to defend users from, but it really needs to be a configuration option that can be turned off. Or at least it should work consistently since being unpredictable totally ruins it as a security feature.

It's forced me to revert to using Firefox for local web development since I can only use Opera after the content is published to remote servers

Thank you greatly, Graycode See Profile, for the link to »my.opera.com/community/forums/to···d=236172 !!

A post therein seems to have solved the Warning message problem for me. The second post in that thread (from Cybe-Rider, about placing a downloaded 5.00.2218.1 version copy of msimg32.dll in the Opera folder only, thereby not perturbing the existing older version in the Windows/System folder) works like a charm for Win98 FE. His download link in that post works fine to get the dll file, and the downloaded copy scanned clean here.

After placing the dll file in the Opera folder, the warning message no longer pops up when Opera's started, and Opera (so far) seems to work fine on all the sites I've tried - though it remains to be seen what will happen if Opera actually tries to invoke a transparency function in the newer dll that may not have an appropriate version of some linked dll in my older Win98 system versions. So far so good, anyway... at least Opera seems happy now when started, and I can avoid "dll Hell" for the rest of the system.
