The incorporation of DOCSIS 3 is a great financial burden on the company and, while there are some benefits to the company through the switch over, it's primarily in a competitive sense. The consumer, without a doubt, is the main benefactor of the new protocol.

And sure, the current extreme package is plenty fast, and there's even Nitro for those who require more, but really, who is going to complain about being able to download even faster? Not to mention, with the current infrastructure, upstream is severely limited, and in dire need of improvement. DOCSIS 3 should allow for that.

As for the bandwidth caps, that has no effect on the speed you obtain items, only the amount of items you can obtain within a given period. An increase in speed only become problematic in this sense if you feel the need to download everything you can get your hands on. That said, I would imagine an increase in the bandwidth usage guidelines would increase with the introduction of the new standard.
