(since many stores with this pinpad swipe the cards through the pinpad)... fortunately many large retailers have systems to detect foreign pinpads at the point of sale, but many don't *cough gas stations *cough*. In addition to these pinpads being risky from the consumers point of view, they're also a target for theft, so retailers have been switching to newer models that aren't yet modifiable....
yupislyr : As already stated, on current magnetic strip cards used in any Canadian bank or credit union, there is no PIN stored on your card. They use no different hardware than CIBC, and RBC. Bank of Montreal, HSBC, National Bank of Canada, and many credit unions, all use the same hardware. Even then, other ABM hardware is basically no different. If they use the older magnetic stripe technology, they are just as secure as any other machine. Some banks have rolled out some additional anti-skimming tools, but you'd still be wrong since PCF is one of the banks using those very tools.

If anything, I'd say it would be more difficult for a fraudster to do something to a machine in a busy store with a bunch of people around all the time.

Regardless of all that, PCF ABMs are more secure simply because of the fact that they are all smart card ready. Now they just need to roll out all those smart cards and get people using the more secure technology.
