I had been looking forward to some of the new 9.5 features, and I certainly was pleased with the much faster speed I observed when I was using it. From what I've observed at various forums, the problems folks are having with 9.5 are both very real and very uneven... a number of users have similar problems - but many other users don't see them, for whatever reason. Kind of reminds me of some of the more problematic Windows updates (or even the Vista release) that would work fine for many and give "fits" to others.

Probably some of the problems are related to Win98 compatibility bugs... the tiny-image print problem is likely one of those. I'm just grateful that Opera has so consistently put out top-notch browser versions for free over the years. And, if there should be the rare "blowout" upgrade that crops up from time to time, that's why I run imaging software on my systems - and often.

Anyhow, I'll just sit on the version sideline until I feel (from changelogs, etc) that there's a fair chance my problems are resolved... then I'll dip back into the upgrade waters. ;)
--
If God wanted us to work with electrons, He'd make them big enough to see...

Blackbird : Well, I've finally hit an Opera upgrade that bombed out for me. After trying Opera 9.5 for about 10 days, I've Ghosted my Win98 computer back to version 9.27. Because I use the Win98 system as something of a guinea-pig for upgrades, I'll not even be attempting a 9.5 upgrade to the XP systems here... way too many recurring Opera 9.5 problems with 98, 98SE, XP, and Vista surfacing at a number of online forums, and way too few on-target fixes from Opera thus far. Methinks this'll cause me to pass for several upgrade versions before I regain the confidence to try upgrading again.

Problems that were insurmountable for me were:
1) Printing a web-page on an HP inkjet created a 1x1-1/2" micro-image in the top left corner of the page. Attempts at all sorts of creative zooming, scaling print, print from print preview, and other 'back-door' attempts at printing all failed to remedy this problem. Opera forum shows several others with the identical problem.
2) There is a major GDI leak/failure-to-release of some kind in Opera 9.5. Each very ordinary web page loaded (including Opera's own website) ate up 3-5% of available GDI resources - but would never release the resources, even if the caches were cleared. Eventually, after 15-25 sites were visited and as the GDI resources dropped below 5-10%, the screen image would begin to break up, usually first appearing in the tool, menu, and message bars - but eventually progressing across the whole window - black lines, gibberish, bars, etc. If one reacted quickly enough, Opera could be force-closed with the "x" button, but if I was too late, the entire computer locked up.

Lesser problems were:
3) The "back" button would often bring up a previous page with corrupted format, requiring a forced manual reload to recover the correct format.
4) Cookies were no longer able to be edited... the "edit" button seemed inactive, and only "delete" was available as an option, and the "add" button was not present.

And with all these issues, I never even got to the point of checking for some of the download/transfer screen problems many others have been seeing. But I did find the new inability to clear the transfer/download cache of records more than a bit annoying and risky to privacy.

Note: regression to v9.27 cleared up every single problem.
--
If God wanted us to work with electrons, He'd make them big enough to see...

So far so good, anyway... at least Opera seems happy now when started, and I can avoid "dll Hell" for the rest of the system.
--
If God wanted us to work with electrons, He'd make them big enough to see...

The message then suggests replacing the file with one from a Windows ME disk set. Unfortunately, that could conceivably be a fast-track that descends into "dll Hell", since other dll's linked to msimg32 might also need to be updated as a result, and their dependency dll's updated as well... and so on, down into the abyss.

So far, I've encountered no problems with rendering any of the sites I've tried... but the warning message each time I start up Opera is a pain... you have to manually clear it to let Opera load. There needs to be some way to allow/direct Opera to ignore the msimg32 version for those willing to live with any rendering problems that might appear from time to time. That, or there needs to be some positive assurances (based on tests) that a specific later version of msimg32.dll will work with Windows 98 FE with no unpleasant dll side effects. My version is 5.00.1693.1.

I've submitted this to Opera as a bug, but I'm not sure it really falls into that category...
--
If God wanted us to work with electrons, He'd make them big enough to see...

[Update] Opera 9.50 Final

richter35 : Hmm...from RC to final in 24h. They must have been in a hurry. :D

Here's the announcement:

Almost two years ago I stepped onto a pier in Seattle to unveil Opera 9 to the world. Many things at Opera have changed since then, but our commitment to providing you with a powerful, safe and fast Web experience has not. Since that day we have been hard at work on our next generation browser, code-named Kestrel. I'm pleased to announce that today we are ready to share the fruits of our labor with you.

I invite each of you to try Opera 9.5, arriving very soon. We've worked exceptionally hard during the past two years to make something we're very proud to present to you. We've listened to your feedback, learned from your experiences using our browser, and channeled your input to make our best browser yet.

Opera 9.5 has a brand-new look that feels inspired by high-end audio equipment and Scandinavian design. Our refined address bar allows you to find *any* word on *any* Web page you have visited before. Opera Link allows you to bring your favorite browser with you, wherever you go. You can sync your bookmarks, Speed Dial, and Notes, and work seamlessly with Opera Mini, our award-winning browser for your mobile phone. We protect you against two different types of malware that may try to infect your computer.

We refused to compromise, and I think the result speaks for itself. I truly feel this is our most powerful, safest and fastest Web browser yet.

But while we are pleased about our release of Opera 9.5, today is really about you. You have supported us and helped us evolve since we began 12 years ago. Back then we were just two people, sitting in a Norwegian basement. Now we are more than 500 people working to improve the Web for all. I cannot thank you enough for everything you have done - and continue to do - for us.

I hope you enjoy Opera 9.5, and I hope you will continue to support us by turning the whisper into a shout. Help us continue making the Web a better place for all by telling someone about Opera today.

Respectfully yours,

Jon von Tetzchner, Opera

The release is on their server. Their homepage has yet to be updated.

»get.opera.com/pub/opera/
»get.opera.com/pub/opera/win/950/ (Windows)

Homepage
