| Ethernet cable?
I recently purchased a second computer. It came with a wireless card, so I'm going to move my current computer, which is connected to a Westell 327w, to the other end of the house. Trouble is, at that distance, the new computer with the wireless card cannot pick up the signal....so on to plan 2. I would like to locate the westell 327 about halfway between the 2 computers. I have a phone jack, and an electrical outlet, but I still need to connect the Westell to the older computer. For this I will need about 30 feet of ethernet cable. Right now the cable that connects the router to the computer is yellow. I am just not sure what kind of cable this is, and if it is sold in stores like Circuit City or Best Buy, or if I have to order this online. Am I safe in looking for RJ45 ethernet cable or is called something else? |

| It should be available at many computer stores, though some might not carry cables long enough for your needs. In my experience it is usually called an "ethernet patch cable". And yes, it might be called "RJ45", though according to this Wiki entry, that's technically the wrong name for the connector used. -- AT&T dsl; Westell 327w modem/router; SuSE 10.1; firefox 2.0.0.14 |

| Thanks for the quick reply. I looked on Amazon and they have this: Belkin A3L791-S 25-Foot RJ45 CAT 5e Snagless Molded Patch Cable. They have various lengths. If I have to order this online, I'm wondering if I'm on the right track with this particular cable. |

| That should be fine. Just make sure the 25 ft is long enough for your needs.
I have a 50 ft Belkin ethernet cable. It is mostly sitting on the shelf, but used from time to time for temporary purposes. It has been quite reliable. -- AT&T dsl; Westell 327w modem/router; SuSE 10.1; firefox 2.0.0.14 |

| That idea has possibilities. I already have a wireless card. A pci adapter w/speedbooster from Linksys WMP54GS. Right now it's in the old, old XP that's currently occupying the spot the old Vista will soon fill. I could give it a try before thinking about the cable. I don't know if it will work in Vista, although it has a sticker on the box stating: Upgradable to Windows Vista. I might have to d/l some drivers, though. I have to read through the literature. Thanks for the suggestion. |
