I have Bellsouth, now ATT, DSL. It is fairly stable most of the time, but when it is storming 15-20 miles (yes literally) away or closer the service stops working. Usually the lights don't even start blinking on the modem, but the service stops. When the storm gets really close, the lights do blink.
The main annoying problem with this is that I have to open my router interface (WRT600N), go to the Basic Setup page where the Internet and Network setup options are and click Save Settings to get the connection back. I then wait 25 seconds for it to do it's thing and my service comes back. I have tried just waiting it out without doing this and the service never comes back on it's own.
So, my question is, isn't there an automated or faster way of doing this? |

@bellsouth.net | Can't find the power button on the router right off the bat. I know it'd be faster to hit the button, if it's going to take the same time (25 seconds) to get the connection back either way. |

@bellsouth.net | Yeah, it only has a reset button which is hard to get to. |

Have you always had this problem since you have had this modem? |

| reply to belldsl I have the same problem. Have a read on my thread a few weeks ago if you feel like it (long)
»Is your DSL connection interrupted by Lightening?
I was using a Dlink router with a Westell 6100 (in bridge mode). I am still not 100% sure what happens during thunderstorm/lightening but I would always lose connection.
I solved the problem completely by switching over to Netopia 2210 (please note that some people swear by their lives that switching modem would not solve the problem; but there are also enough cases, including mine, that a modem change resolved the problem).
Before switching modem, I noticed that my Westell sometimes did not even lose sync most of the time but something is out of whack (sorry, I really don't know how to describe it better) enough that the router and modem loses connection. If I forces the router to disconnect then it would reconnect automatically and everything will be ok. (During a bad thunderstorm, I would repeat this procedure upon each disconnection). If I don't do anything, the router and modem will eventually hook up again (I am guessing the router does not constantly check if the DSL connection is functioning ok; it only does so check periodically).
During testing, I also noticed that I could create the same problem by plugging an unfiltered phone cable -- note I did not even have a phone device hooked to the cable -- into any jack in the house. I now realize that this maybe a result of my messy inside wiring and am working to solve the wiring problem now.
There is a chance that the thunderstorm problem is related to inside wiring (I guess I could test this by fixing my inside wiring mess completely and switching back to Westell and wait for the next thunderstorm, but I doubt I will do such tests unless I am really bored) but I don't think it is easy to get to a conclusion. However, it looks like that Netopia is less sensitive to this problem than a Westell modem.
Sorry for such a long winded answer to your question, My solution to your question may not be easier than your solution. But if you are interested in eliminating your problem associated with remote thunderstorms(during really bad thunderstorms, I assume anything could happen), look into a modem switch (especially if you have a Westell 6100).
Also, you may have trouble to have AT&T/BellSouth to give you a new modem (though some people had done that). Good luck. |

@bellsouth.net | I have the Westell 227w, the wireless one. My wiring is straight Cat5 from the box to the jack inside pvc pipe; no splits. |

@bellsouth.net | I'm pretty sure I tried the Westell 2200 before and I didn't get as good speeds out of it. |
