[Rant] I wanna time shift

I JUST got cable, and a cable box and they've (cablevision ) switched ANIMAL PLANET from Analog to Digital.

Every day while I'm at work they have a good show called It's me or the dog. Since I'm at work when they air it, I time shift it on my dvd recorder. NOW when I try toi do that to the digital broadcast I get the dreaded broadcast flag saying this program is copywrited.

We're talking Animal planet, not HBO here.

I can understand the flag on movies and such, but ANIMAL PLANET???????

They (the content cartels wanting such anti-consumer
technology as the Broadcast Flag) just don't get it.

This is one reason why people pirate.

If you have video outs set your TV to turn on when the thing airs and use RCA cables to a VCR.

Exactly why it was moved off analog[need digital to do BF].

Take maggs suggestion, you'll probably have to get someone to set the time on the VCR if its flashing 12:00 at you like most peoples is.

First..."I" am the one to set the clocks on everything in this house SIR, and second, the reason I switched from VHS (and yes, I still have about three of them), are threefold:
1). tapes degrade as you keep recording them over and over
2). they are getting scarcer- no FAR deals anymore.
3). You can't get a VHS recorder with a digital tuner (and my dvd has that, just bought it in Dec specifically for that).

While I don't consider myself a technology snob, I DO like the quality improvement that dvd gives over VHS.

Sorry. didn't mean to imply you weren't capable of setting the clocks but most peoples vcrs flash 12:00

Perhaps you're a little on edge from not watching Animal Planet.

Would a DVD recorder work? Or do they have the same component inputs as a VCR?

They have BOTH coax AND/or component imputs.

(from what I recall it was the same with my vcrs, wasn't it?)

Rent a DVR, then you won't have this problem.

Oops. Didn't notice you said DVD recorder above in the OP...trying again.

Thought about building a MythTv box?

You'd have to install Linux of one flavor or another, but it's not that much harder than setting the clock on your VCR.

between skipping your wheaties (lower fiber) and nothing to read while on the can, no wonder you've been crabby.

Sweety, hate to point this out to you so bluntly, but go have a gander in the ATU forum. I already run Linux......

By the by. I don't have a tuner card. I watch tv on a REAL tv set.....

DVR

@rr.com

Choice is yours.

The convenience of having a DVR is nowhere close to be near your DVD recorder. I mean, you did lose a show after all...

Also, you can watch TV on your REAL TV with a TV tuner based PC.

So noted. I only know you from the OT Thread.

Your rant subject is one of the myriad reasons why I dumped cable...

Surprise!!!!

They have been trying to figure out how to screw us out of time shifting since the first BetaMax hit the market.

Welcome to the digital revolution.

No, They'll let us time shift, but only through renting THEIR equipment, and doing it on THEIR terms. I got news for them, I do everything on MY terms only.....

Just as a point of info, I spent over an hour on the phone with CS last week to get my DVD recorder hooked up and I had to be transferred to a supervisor cos the CS tech I was speking with "didn't know how to do that", only kew how to hook up DVR....SHEESH
