| Looking for recommendations
Now that I have the DCT700 that I got as part of the analog shut-off, I'd like to hook up another TV. I have a spare one sitting, collecting dust, in our office. Trouble is, I need to run a cable line up to that room. I have an extra output on the cable splitter that Verizon gave me, so that shouldn't be an issue. However, aside from just rerouting cable in one room, I've never really run new cable like that before. I'd like to install it myself (with some help from my father-in-law), but I'd like some recommendations from the good people on this forum about a couple things:
1) How long of a run is too long? Based on the route that I think we're going to take with the cable, the distance from the splitter to where the cable will be coming out of the wall will be ~35'. Add to that the distance from the ONT to the splitter, and you're talking about a run (from ONT to the wall where the cable will eventually be coming out) of about 50'. I have 2 other TVs hooked up currently (guessing that that would make a difference too), each of which is only about 10 feet from the splitter. So, my question is, is an additional 35' run too long?
2) I'm guessing I should run RG6 all the way up. I don't think there's any chance for any interference, but I guess if I'm going to run the cable, I should run shielded. I understand that installing shielded cable has its own set of challenges (making sure the shielding is covering correctly, e.g.). Any thoughts on this? How hard is it to deal with the shielding?
3) In terms of connectors, is there anything I need to consider? I'm not familiar with the types of connectors there are. And does anyone have a recommendation for a tool to use to attach the connectors (brand/type)? Not looking to spend alot of money, but still I'd like a decent tool that works well.
4) Should I consider a signal meter? I don't know if I need to check out the signal levels going to that room or not, or if there's a way to test it via the STB.
Again, any recommendations would be very greatly appreciated.
Thanks. |

| reply to JPL Just recently wired my entire house for FiOS (house had never been wired since we've always been exclusively over the air viewers). I put in 5 TV runs and 1 run for the router, all using RG6 Quad Shield COAX with compression connectors. My runs range from a minimum of about 15' to a max of almost 70'. Every thing works great with no problems. Have had family members viewing multiple TV shows, working on the internet, and talking on the phone all simultaneously. Other than the COAX, the only thing I purchased was a Home Depot Cable Kit (stripper, compression tool, etc.) and a stapler with special coax-type staples -- no meter. When my FiOS was installed, I asked the installer to check each run with his meter and all tested out perfectly. |

| Thanks, Tomel. Sounds like the run I want to do isn't going to put an undue strain on my setup. I didn't think it would. Do you happen to remember which cable kit you got? I don't think I'm going to need to staple the cable anywhere. Now I just have to figure out how hard it is to do a wall fish |
