| WWII plane over Hamilton?
I went to my Brother in-laws house for Father's Day dinner.
Did I really have to much to drink out there or did I see a WWII plane flying over his house?
If so what is the story behind it? Is Hamilton doing something crazy for a football game in the future or was it being invaded?
I searched but couldn't find anything on it. |

| reply to Airwolf Looked like it was Blue with a prop on both wings and I'm not sure if there was one on the nose.
I heard it and only looked up as it was passing by and there is a gap between the house and the deck so I only got a quick look.
I thought it was a plane in trouble cause i never heard a plane like that before otherwise I probably wouldn't of even looked. |

1 edit | reply to liverdude It's the Lancaster. It's one of the last remaining flight worthy ones in the world.
They fly it at regular times throughout the summer. I can see it from my work building.
It's pretty intimidating. It has a hell of a roar in the engine. |

1 edit | reply to liverdude The Lancaster was at the Niagara Central Airshow this weekend. It's the largest propeller-driven airshow in Canada. I did gate security at the end of the runway, and watching a B-17 take off and land right next to me was pretty damn impressive. The Lancaster came later in the afternoon, it was escorted by four WW2-era planes - a P51 Mustang, a Hurricane, a Spitfire, and a Messerschmitt 109. I really enjoyed watching them fly in from Hamilton in formation and do low-level flybys of the airfield. Had the binoculars and was even able to see the pilot inside. It's a very impressive plane - my Granny build them during WW2 at the Avro plant outside of Manchester, and she was always VERY proud of her work, rightfully so!
We had two C-130s come from Niagara AFB as well. They were the only turboprops at the show. Those are outright quiet compared to the piston engine planes.
Also - that Lancaster is one of only three that are airworthy in the entire world - one is in Australia, one is in the US, and the the other is based right out of Hamilton. -- I swear that I will faithfully and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. |

| reply to liverdude One engine per wing or two? The Lancaster is black on the bottom with a tan/camouflage green upper surface. I'd guess it was the B-25 Mitchell that CWHM owns as it is painted blue on the bottom and camouflage green on top. The Lanc is also much louder and deeper sounding with 4 RR Merlins instead of two Wasps. It could also have been the Canso which is white but can look light blue under certain conditions or the Dakota which is painted blue/gray on the bottom. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars -- Peart/Lee/Lifeson Join Team Helix

| reply to liverdude said by liverdude :Now that is cool, they were giving rides to Lancaster rides are expensive. My grandfather has been offered a flight on it for free, as he was a bomber pilot who survived being shot down in WW2. While he didn't fly the Lancaster (he flew Wellingtons, he describes the Lancaster as "too easy to fly") they're doing this for him as a gesture of appreciation for his service. It's supposed to happen sometime this summer, not exactly sure when though. -- I swear that I will faithfully and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. |

| reply to liverdude Also another note about Hamilton's Lancaster - in the photo that Kardinal posted you'll see a turret on the top of the plane. This was added later on and not part of the original design. This particular Lancaster also never saw service during WW2, it was built a few years after the war. -- I swear that I will faithfully and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. |

| said by Last Parade :where everyone was pulled over to the shoulder. That didn't last too long. The police and parking enforcement kicked them off the road. I called in a few people who wouldn't leave when politely asked and the police dealt with them instead. One old senile fart said he was the Mayor of Niagara Falls (he was neither fat enough nor Italian enough) and, after my uncle got frustrated and told them to fuck off after they claimed no one had the right to tell them where they could go, the old asshat came close to throwing a punch. That was dealt with swiftly. -- I swear that I will faithfully and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. |

| reply to liverdude I forgot about this. I saw some large WWII bomber fly over south Mississauga on Saturday afternoon. My buddy & I had just spent the good part of the day watching Euro2008 and imbibing in more than a few cold adult beverages, so I kinda forgot about this. Dunno if it was the Lancaster or the B25 though. I drunkenly thought it was a B-24 due to the tail, but clearly I'm no expert! |

The Lancaster is a beautiful sight, and louder when taxi-ing and flying than most passenger jets -- All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing - Edmund Burke. "Walk the Talk". |

There was also an Avenger at the show. Now -that- is a LOUD LOUD plane. | Here's the B-25. Special edition because of the 3 stripes on each wing. I learned why they were painted there on the field trip...very educational. Any guesses? -- All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing - Edmund Burke. "Walk the Talk". |

All this talk of warbirds is making me crave an air show. Fortunately the one here is in two weeks and Micheal Potter (founder of high-tech company Cognos) and his Vintage Wings Canada foundation will be showing off their Spit, 'Stang, Corsair, Hurri, Tiger Moth, Harvard, Beech Staggerwing and who knows what else at the Air Show Ottawa. I don't think the Sabre 6 they are currently restoring will be shown though. I'm looking forward to taking a friend to his first airshow. dennilfloss , if you want to go again, let me know and I'll see if we can't work something out. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars -- Peart/Lee/Lifeson Join Team Helix
