I can't stand it not only is it a really dumb commercial.

It reminds me that East Mesa is still screwed and doesn't have On Demand yet.

Actually, the commercial is correct. DirecTV uses what is called Push Video On Demand which is not true Video On Demand.

Push video on demand is a technique used by a number of broadcasters on systems that lack the interactivity to provide true video on demand, to simulate a true video on demand system. A push VOD system uses a Personal Video Recorder (PVR) or Digital Video Recorder (DVR) to automatically record a selection of programming, often transmitted in spare capacity overnight. Users can then watch the downloaded programming at times of their choosing. As content occupies space on the PVR/DVR hard drive, downloaded content is usually deleted after a week to make way for new programs. The limited space on a typical PVR/DVR hard drive means that the flexibility and selection of programs available on such systems is more restricted than true VOD systems. (Provided by Wikipedia)

With Cox, a DVR is not needed as the Video On Demand service is a single signal streamed to the receiver, no need to be able to download to a hard drive and doesn't require a high speed connection. So the service doesn't require you to upgrade to HD or DVR and can be used with a standard definition digital receiver such as the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000/2100/2200/3250 etc. So all you would need is just the standard digital service.

These are the requirements on DirecTV's website of what is required for their On Demand service which in reality would end up being more costly.

"To enjoy the DIRECTV on DEMAND service, you need:

* A DIRECTV Plus® HD DVR receiver (HR20 or HR21 model)
* Your receiver must be connected to the Internet
* HD Access and DVR service
* Broadband Internet service with a minimum connection speed of 750 Kbps or higher (DSL or cable)
* A network router with an available Ethernet port
* A land-based phone line connection
* An available wall outlet"

Actually no... the new DirecTV VOD feature isn't a push technology. You pick the program you want...and it starts streaming to you.

You may want to check out their site and watch the video. You'll notice that in the video once you select the program you have to put it into your download queue and download it to your DVR. You can watch it as it downloads, but that is not an actual stream. It would be just like downloading a movie on the internet.

All I know is my Cox OD is simple: just click on what you want and it begin playing. Everything comes over the coax right to my TV. DirecTV is not simple: I must have a DVR, must have BB Internet; must have a home network and figure out how to get it from the modem to the TV. Granted, I now have all that extra stuff, but mosy folks probably do not.
