Verizon already in area; don't see Verizon moving in ...

... where they don't already have a presence.

Some may think that this is an indication that Verizon may try to take Fios national and become a major overbuilder around the country. I just don't see that happening.

Verizon was already in the DFW area.

Verizon will extend its fiber-optic lines into neighborhoods covered by AT&T in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, a region the two companies share, Verizon said Monday. The company said it might do the same in other parts of the United States.
In areas where they already have a major presence, they may try and expand within the area. But in cities where they aren't doing landline business already, I don't see them moving in on other incumbents.

VZ is also in the LA area around Long Beach and a couple smaller areas. I could see them cherry picking some of the higher end suburbs or apt complexes around there. I dont think it would be much of a reach for them.

They weren't sharing the same cities however. Much like Cox and Time Warner share DFW, and Comcast and TWC share Kansas City, ATT and Verizon share the metroplex along county and city lines.

In other words, Verizon is in fact going into areas where it had no actual presence, and is laying new lines down in ATT areas which it previously had no access to, and provided no services in.

Let's face it. The majority of people want FiOS.

Verizon has offers what cable has today... only with fiber to the house, and the ability for higher data rates.
Verizon offers what people are asking for (not all, but in general what people want).
AT&T offers a TV service, but has many restrictions and not a clean build.

FiOS = Fiber , it works or it doesn't. Replace the line if the line is bad.
VDSL = POTS on VDSL --

A glimmer of hope for Silicon Gulch?

VZ (formerly GTE) is the LEC for Los Gatos and Morgan Hill, both 'bedroom' communities for the San Jose/Silicon Valley area. I'm located in the Almaden Valley area of San Jose, just a couple of miles from Los Gatos. I'm currently on an AT&T RT for sonic.net DSL, but would love to see VZ come 'over the line' in my direction. I see U-Verse terminals going in all over the San Jose area, but none in my area yet.

I can hope, can't I?

Fortunate for you (maybe).
I'm in Santa Clarita, which is a 100% SBC/AT&T city
Over the hill into North Hills, my inlaws as in a Verizon 'pocket' of Verizon in Los Angeles/San Fernando Valley.

No, but if they were smart, they would. Verizon has major leg up on all of the other providers in America. And that comes from someone who works for one of them.

Wall Street would punish the stock severely in the near-term.

That's true, but that's because Wall Street is chocked full of idiots looking for short term gains... Unfortunately, investing is viewed the same way going to the Casino is viewed.
