| [connectivity] connection lost daily
Hi, I've been having connection problems for awhile. I lose connection almost every day mid-afternoon until 9 or 10 at night. I had this problem when I first got dsl about 18 months ago. I finally made it to a second or third tier person who did not want to see my modem stats and basically told me that he would disconnect me with no termination fee as my only choice. I wanted to think about it and mysteriously my connection got lots better although at a lower speed.
It's like a switch goes off and I get disconnected for the day. I replaced the filters, unplugged Directv and turned off the florescent lights. I do have a 900 cordless phone that hasn't moved since I got over my first problems. I tried to plug the modem directly into the NIC but the only plug in it made my phone not work. I did notice that I seem to have a filter in the NIC(I can take a picture of it) and 1 less plug than I remember. I have the Westell modem browser up at all times and the only thing I see before I get disconnected is a jump in "invalid or dropped cells" and "discarded frames" if I am reading the columns correctly. I have not been able to find explanations to figure out what that means. The downstream noise margin drops from 14.5 to 3 to 1.5 within 2 minutes and I get disconnected. Does any of this give anyone any thoughts as to what I might try to fix this. Last time I had problems I had someone out here every few days after jumping thru hoops for phone tech to the tune of a few hours every day. The phone tech did put in a connection just for the 6011 which is thru the wall and about 3 feet from the NIC. Any help appreciated.
Westell 6100 768/120 but I most times get 864/160 Winxp pro Westell modem browser with logs |

| What is your downstream and upstream attenuation markers reading at? With a margin of 14.5, it shouldn't be bombing down that fast, so something is up with the wiring of your house or the line to the CO/RT you're fed out of. When the DSL starts to get flaky, do you start to hear noise coming into your phone line, like hissing, buzzing, popping, cracking, etc? |

| Hi, Attenuation is up 31.5, down 63.5- those numbers don't seem to change. The drop to 3 then 1.5 happens quickly but I'll try to see if there is noise when it happens. | reply to Smith6612 Hi, There is no noise, that I can hear, when the connection starts to go south. The modem is pretty close to being plugged into the NID(I meant NID not NIC in previous message). The jack is a year old- the only thing plugged into it is the 6100- which goes directly to the NID for 3 feetoutside. Do you think my posting in Verizon Direct would help me? |
