The receiver makes a great target. You can clamp it to a pole - raise it - lower it. Just kidding, The modem has to be tuned to the frequency received by the antenna. Unless you have access to the program that the field techs used to tune the modem - they're pretty much garbage.

 Well, that's kinda along the lines of what I was thinking.... There are a couple of open source programs that will allow you to do some queries of the hybrid modem.... I was able to talk to mine, read out the signal strength and such, but I haven't found any more detail on how to program the thing.

Now if we could just get that program from some disgruntled Sprint engineer or installer.....
