2 edits | [OLEXP] Microsoft will extend Hotmail access via OE deadline
As discussed in an earlier thread, access to Hotmail through Outlook Express was supposed to end on June 30th. »[Outlook] As Of 06/30/08 One and Only Free OE Will End.
However, I just received the following email. (Not sure how long access will be extended, but for now at least, it appears that it will be).
quote:
Dear Microsoft Outlook Express customer,
You may have received an e-mail from us letting you know that Microsoft is planning to retire the DAV protocol that Outlook Express uses to access Windows Live Hotmail. In response to customer feedback requesting more time to evaluate alternative solutions, we have decided to postpone retiring DAV and we are investigating other alternatives for accessing Windows Live Hotmail via Outlook Express. This means that if you use Outlook Express to access your Windows Live Hotmail account, you will continue to be able to do so beyond the previously announced June 30 transition deadline. We will be sure to update you once we have additional plans to share and early enough in advance to help ensure a smooth transition in the future.
Additionally, Outlook Express customers that use Windows Vista or Windows XP are always welcome to download and use our next generation free email client, Windows Live Mail, providing the familiarity of Outlook Express and much more. You can download the new client at »get.live.com/wlmail/overview.
We appreciate your feedback, and encourage you to continue to provide it.
Sincerely,
Windows Live Mail Team

"In response to customer feedback requesting more time to evaluate alternative solutions, we have decided to postpone retiring DAV and we are investigating other alternatives for accessing Windows Live Hotmail via Outlook Express"
That should get the attention of some people in the original thread, who were convinced that Outlook Express itself was getting very close to fading away into the sunset.
Guess we'll just wait and see how this evolves. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

Guess we'll just wait and see how this evolves. OE is not going anywhere until 2014 when XP is no longer supported. Even then you could continue to use XP and OE if you still want to that long from now. Now that I installed Vista on a virtual machine, I was looking at Windows Mail that comes with it and it would be ok except for one MAJOR, GLARING DEFICIENCY. Why did Microsoft kill Identities in Windows Mail? They say something about this was for security reasons? That's got to be wrong. I've used Identities since Windows 98 and I can't fathom how Identities are a security risk (anymore than something dumb like having the preview pane on by default or having HTML checked by default). Plus, I don't want an email client that has gone BACKWARDS and no longer can do Identities. So, I'm glad OE will be around for XP users for a long time. If I ever get a computer with Vista on it, I guess I'll switch to Thunderbird as I think it still does Identities or SeaMonkey mail which does Identities. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | reply to jabarnut They probably assume 1) each user only have 1 email account (if not then they "should be using outlook + exchange" 2) each user has their own Windows account (remember OE dates from a time that multiuser support in Windows wasn't too great).
Sorry to say I've searched and searched and searched for a simple alternative free or paid to Outlook+Exchange and have not yet found one that can fully match it. -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |
