Socal doesn't have them yet by the way, and Socal TWC employees know absolutely nothing about it, except what they also read on the website....

And TWC's definition of "soon"spans over a time period I would not normally associate with "soon". :D

We'll see. As of late - that is the last 6 months or so - I have become increasingly frustrated with Time Warner Cable. They don't know a lot about anything at customer service, so I don't know why I still bother with calling them. The only real helpful person I ever got to communicate with over email was on the socal management team.

About 3 years ago - prior to the Adelphia/Comcast grab - you called TWC and you actually got to talk to someone that knew what they were doing. Things haven't changed for the better as of late.

I call TWC and ask about the new HD channels. Guy on the phone knows nothing about any new HD channels. I point him to the website that says "coming soon" these channels, and give him a few known channel names.

"We currently don't carry those in HD"

Guy knows absolutely nothing, but stayed polite. I'll give him that as kudos. :)

Oh and NO.... I am not interested in your upselling attempt of phone service after I got 0 information out of you. :D

Guess we'll just have to wait. We here at DSLReports often get "the scoop" before their customer service does anyways. They always live about a MONTH back in time. ;)

There are 11 national HD channels DirecTV carries that TW has no contract for (NFL Network HD, NFL RedZone HD, Fuel HD, HDNet, HDNet Movies and the 6 Viacom HD channels). There's over 40 HD channels TW has contracts for that DirecTV doesn't carry.

As far as national contracts go, DirecTV is just about dead last among big name MSOs. Verizon, AT&T, Dish Network and Time Warner all whoop the almighty DirecTVs ass when it comes to HD. DirecTV is an HD joke. No Travel Channel HD, no ESPN U HD, no AMC HD, no IFC HD, where's all the HBO and Cinemax HD channels, no Encore HD, no Versus HD, no MSNBC HD, no HLN HD, no Investigation Discovery HD, I could go on and on.

That means both Motorola and Cisco can have SDV. The Adelphia Moxi's might not support SDV so they might have to be swapped for a Moto box. Though they might release a FW update to enable SDV support. I don't see that happening though. SDV is great when it works. When it doesn't you'll see a "Channel not available Message". On Navigator you can press A to try getting it back but A usually doesn't work. I think SoCal could deploy the Samsung DVR for the Cisco area. San Diego has the new Samsung DVR with a 320 GB HDD running ODN v3.1.3_2. and FW v4.2.2.3 It doesn't support OTA but it did come with a DTV notice :). I think MSNBC HD is a likely channel and maybe BBC America HD. Contact your local TWC to see what you want in the new HD channel list.

If you have any Navigator issue please contact TWC using the contact us form but tell them you want it sent to the Navigator engineering team or department to make sure that you get a response. They do respond to your criticism's.

I know that they rolled out a set of channels including "Planet Green HD" (that's the only one I can remember) to about 12 cities across the entire southland, but they mysteriously stopped ALL HD channel rollouts as of roughly April 2009, only adding Fox Sports West HD and Prime Ticket HD, and replacing 413 (which as the TWC Sports Events channel) with KCOP13 that doesn't even broadcast in HD most of the time. And that channel 445 I think isn't even a HD channel and doesn't work anymore I believe.

Actually San Diego has more channels than SoCal but only in the SA area. I live in the SA area and we have SDV which is great if it works. We just got a few big10 overflows. More HD channels should be coming soon and a few analogs are going digital to allow for even more channels. I too want new HD channels but our division picks the lamest ones. If you can find the legal notice then it might show future HD channels.

Effective May 27, 2009 in Canyon Country and Santa Clarita/Stevenson Ranch KDOC (IND) will move from channel 25 to channel 6.

Effective May 27, 2009 in South Pasadena and San Marino, KDOC (IND) will move from channel 10 to channel 6 and Leased Access will move from channel 6 to channel 10.

Effective May 27, 2009, MLB Extra Innings/NHL Center Ice will be removed from channels 701 through 710. These same channels will continue to be available on channels 755 through 768. No programming will be lost.

My question was SPECIFICALLY about FSN WEST and PRIME TICKET, as Angels and Dodgers games are often not in HD because they share the same 413 channel - only one of them is shown in HD, and the other one isn't.

It's pretty clear that customer service knows nothing.

One is ODN aka OCAP Digital Navigator. ODN runs on the HDC boxes and all tru2way devices. That way you can have full digital cable features without having a box. ODN is written in Java and runs on a Java middleware that translates Java code to native machine code. It's pretty stable but it has it's issues.

The other version of Navigator is MDN. MDN is the non OCAP version of Navigator. It runs on legacy Passport boxes. I wouldn't recommend running it on an old Pioneer or SA box since it looks like DOS and runs very slowly. It's pretty responsive on newer legacy boxes like my 3250HD. The 8300HD's run it very well. Sometimes faster than the HDC's running ODN. It does have stability issues.

Motorola networks will continue to use iGuide until who knows when. TWC was working with some company to port Navigator to Moto boxes but now they have OCAP/tru2way so they could use newer Moto boxes and run ODN. The deal with OpenTV to make a moto compliant version of Navigator has fell through but they are working with them on other projects. The Moto DCX boxes will get a tru2way version of iGuide.

I have Navigator and it's ok. Not as good as Passport but it's getting there. The OCAP/tru2way version and the legacy version has it's issues. Some features that are in Passport aren't in Navigator like true Manual recording and Keyword search. ODN the OCAP/tru2way version has broken eSATA support. It might be this summer. San Diego our division has had it for about a year. It might depend on what your division is doing. It will be a staggered rollout. Some boxes will get it first and others will get it later. Phone rings, and I got a three-way with person A calling person B, and since our line got crossed with person B, we got the call too. On top of that, I live in the MIDDLE of town, in an area built up in the 50ies and 60ies. AT&T states U-verse is available in the city of Orange, and I know at least 1 person who got it installed over at the east side of Orange. I however am 11000 ft from the CO, and it tells me U-Verse is not available, nor are any speeds better then 6 Mbps available.

The best thing of all is that I recently got called... TWICE in one week, by AT&T, wondering if I was interested in their "new, fast, DOUBLED in speed DSL". Turns out they increased the default speeds from 3 to 6 Mbps.

I asked them if they could do anything better then the 15/2 connection I already had, but of course they couldn't.

Nah... I got a dual tuner HD DVR and I watch HD channels in clear qam on my office TV (card in PC), so it is very likely 3 HD streams will be used in my house with 1 TV and 1 PC with TV card.

These channels have a scheduled launch in a SELECTIVE set of cities so far, and I am presuming that the rest of the cities still need to be planned. (See link posted above)

For all channels goes that they will be launched on the same service level as the standard definition version of each respective channel. Meaning: If you don't pay for the SD version of the channel, ya ain't getting the HD version.

In regards to the INDemand Sports HD channels: I already seem to have them, and had them for several months.... I never purchased anything though, and probably won't either.

Looks like they added USA HD, Bravo HD, Scifi HD, CNBC HD, and KVEA HD (That last one is Telemundo HD)

Also the list of cities that they are launching other networks in seems limited.

The first batch of 12 HD channels is still listed too, but that should be done by this month.

I have NBATV HD on CH. 713 in San Diego and most of the time it's just a static screen. Maybe it's our area. San Diego has had this channel for quite some time. They are getting some of the new SoCal HD channels but not all. Maybe more HD channels will be added next year when they start to get rid of analog. I want SciFi HD too, but it really depends on the agreement they can make with SciFi channel. TWC wants to add the HD version of a channel you already pay for for free, and not all channels agree with that philosophy. It may be a little harder to strike a deal with SciFi HD.

Santa Clarita and Tujunga are former Comcast areas, but we're not even on their radar for this next round, and I think Santa Clarita was near the absolute last to get the last round of upgrades.

The upgrades have made the HD picture horrible. It used to be pristine. Now there's frequent loss of composure (discoloration and pixelization) at scene changes. It's now far worse than U-verse's ultra-compressed MPEG-4 feed. It also has a strange side-effect on the 6412 DVR: The fast forward speeds are goofed up. The second press of the FF button barely moves, but the third now moves way too fast.

The box requirement, in ex-Comcast areas, alone allows for easy digital channel upgrades (dropping analog) for everything above about channel 36 or so. 40 less analog channels (compared to systems with 78 analog channels) available for digital expansion with just a box swap (analog to digital) in the customer's home is a no-brainer upgrade.

ex-Adelphia areas have a much harder time weening analog customers with 78 channels direct to set off and issuing boxes to all of them, so they've been expanding capacity in other ways.

Yeah from what I understand Time Warner's network was "decent", Conmcast's network was "good", and Adelphia's network was an "utter disaster".

And TWC had to patch em all together. ;)

Ah well, Orange was one of the very first to get the first 12 HD channels, I'm sure we'll get em soon enough. Too bad no SciFi Channel or BRAVO.

One interesting note: The above message states "beginning November 19th", but 5 channels spaces still need to be moved:

"Effective November 25, 2008, CRN 1-6 will be moving from channel 460-465, to channel 971-976."

Whether they are capable or not, it is good to note that out of the "80 channels" they promised, and the same goes for the "100 channels by end of year" from DirecTV, that a great portion of those are Premium channels, such as 6 or 7 HD versions of HBO which has 10 channels now, and likewise for Showtime, Starz, etc. That could easily add up to 30 to 40 HD channels for which a premium subscription is required.

Now I already have HBO (only HBO) from the premium tiers, so i will welcome the HD versions of those.... That's one HD channel LESS in the HD Package.... I pay for those channels actually. I wonder if they are going to replace it with something better. I love HDNet and Universal HD though, they got some great stuff going on.

The InHDs/Mojo HD were never a part of the HD Tier here, they were always free, but it looks like the latest addition to the HD Tier is MGM HD.

Here's it's $4.95 from HD Net, HD Net Movies, Universal HD and now MGM HD. If TW ever gets contracts with Smithsonian HD and Wealth HD I'd expect them to go in the HD Tier as well.

I always knew there were people that were pretty short-sighted, but that it was THIS bad.... I had no idea! Over 95% of Hispanics in California are here completely legal, and more then half of latinos are born and raised here as Americans.

1) None of the channels mentioned are high-definition. I don't know how Socal is setup, but from what I remember you can put about 4 or 5 SD channels in the same bandwidth as 1 HD channel.

2) Half of the channels mentioned there are already provided, they are just also offering them on a different set of channel numbers. Eventually, they will consolidate them across the board so that they are the same for everyone.

If you didn't get the 12 HDs release to part of Murrieta and several other locations on 8/13, you should get them on 9/16. KCOP (myTV) HD may be added then too, although it's schedule is somewhat independent of the other 12.

MyNetworkTV-HD do air most movies in HD on Thursday and Saturday nights. The Twilight Zone is presented in HD and also WWE Friday Night Smackdown! (starts Oct. 3) will be one of the few HD programs. So yeah, not that much HD contents on MyNetworkTV. Its weird they don't air the Angels baseball games in HD.

There was an L.A. Times article back in May 2008 about TWC fewer HD channels in SoCal, mentioned the 12 HD channels we have now (not in all areas yet) and 9 more HD channels by this end of the year. Unfortunately, TWC Southern California has been mis-managed for quite a while.... the networks previously operated by Adelphia were in shambles, the Comcast networks they took over at the same time were not much better, and TWC's own network was just barely being upgraded.

Right now, they are all over the SoCal areas, installing upgraded equipment, running fiber, etc.... I doubt they are able to move up YOUR schedule, without having to drop someone ELSES town at this moment, so I guess that if you want more HD channels, you should switch to DirectTV or Dish.

And hey, if you switch in the next week or so, you may actually get all the Olympics in HD, which TWC customers will NOT get due to no USA HD, no Bravo HD, no MSNBC HD and no CNBC HD, which are (next to NBC HD itself) the channels that they broadcast on.

You are probably very right. ABC Family, Disney Channel and ESPNNews are all owned by the same parent company, HGTV and Food Network share the same parent company, Discovery and TLC have the same parent company, and so do History Channel and A&E.

USA is NBC owned, just like Bravo HD, CNBC HD, MSNBC HD, etc... Sci-Fi is owned by CBS I believe, so that's a whole different ballgame.

Too bad. I would gladly give up Disney HD, ESPNews HD and ABC Family HD, just to get USA HD for the duration of the Olympics.

What's funny is I normally read the opposite complaint: Lots of HD channels air their SD as "stretch-o-vision". That said, I prefer stretching too. My brain can cope with the distortion fine, so use all my screen's real estate, please!

But on that note - most of the SD channels air their HD simulcasted shows with bars on the top and bottom. If I zoom my set to compensate, the result is so blurry it's practically unwatchable!

I hear ya. I don't watch Kyle XY, but I (still) love "Whose Line is it Anyways". ABC Family runs a lot of reruns of old shows, like "Full House" and "Americas Funniest...", and just like "Whose Line" none of those were ever recorded in HD.

Some people hate it, I absolutely do not mind and rather watch the SD picture "stretched" so it fills my screen then having to watch the two big black bars on either side of the screen.

So in that sense, having an HD channel with hardly any HD content is a waste really....

That being said, I am fairly impressed with Discovery HD, National Geographic HD, History Channel HD, Food Network HD, HGTV HD, and CNN HD. My wife loves her design shows in full HD. And I was watching that Ice Road Truckers show in HD last night on History Channel. Very nice.

Too bad that channels like Sci-Fi HD always seem to be neglected. Not just by TWC, but Comcast neglected it as well for a long time, and they recently started adding it. I don't think TWC will get it till next year or so, probably right AFTER the last episode of Galactica airs. :(

I understand about needed network upgrades, and the need to run fiber further into the neighborhood (I saw TWC trucks running fiber 2 months ago in my hood, and got a letter from TWC there may be interruptions due to network upgrades) and all that but when you are ready.... don't offer us ABC Family HD with hardly any HD content. Give us USA-HD instead, so we can at least see MOST of the Olympics in HD coming August.

I got a request in to please add USA-HD to the line up for the coming Olympics, even saying I didn't care if they only put it up temporary and replaced another HD channel for just the Olympics.... we'll see. Don't have much hope unfortunately.

It depends on whether the program broadcasted in HD or not... I have checked the channels today, and and most have either 1080i or 720p HD programming. Discovery HD, National Geographic HD, and History HD definitly seemed 1080i HD, and HGTV and Food Network had both 720p and 1080i shows.... It really depends on what cameras are used. CNN HD is nice, but a lot of the field reporting is not in HD, and neither is much of the footage they show, such as today's Obama/Jackson stuff. You'll see that kind of footage with a HD banner on both sides of the 4:3 picture. The studio shots of Anderson Cooper 360 are all full HD, Larry King is not.

The biggest scam is Disney HD and ABC Family HD. They had NO HD stuff when I checked them tonight, except (ironically) the 700 show on ABC Family with Pat Robertson, the very scary evangelist. But in their defense, they run a LOT of old reruns and cheap programming.

Also, I was hoping the Tour de France was going to be in HD, but Versus HD is broadcasting it in SD.

All in all, i'd say the RIGHT channels are actually in HD, some channels have mostly HD programming but some of it in 720p, and some channels have very limited HD programming, mostly because their lineup has lots of old reruns.

I'd say 70% of channels added today actually have HD content in either 1080i or 720p, and the other 30% i just haven't seen HD stuff. But hey, I don't expect "America's Funniest Home Videos" reruns to be in HD format. :D

So I called TWC to ask them when I might expect the channels. The customer service person told me to tune to Channel 418, which apparently is a new HD channel, but there was nothing there. He explained that they are not given the information as to when the new channels will be launched in certain area. I found this odd because it's listed on their own website and it says "call if your city isn't listed".

I just had a fun time calling about the channels. The first girl I spoke to said the channels should be available but only to my MOXI box. I looked at the MOXI and reset it but they still weren't available. The second girl I spoke to also said the channels should be available to me and through all of my boxes, MOXI, Moto HD DVR w/HDMI, Moto HD STB w/HDMI. None were getting the channels so the girl decided to set up a truck call even after I asked her to PLEASE double check that the channels are available to me.

I decided to call back right after because I knew the channels wouldn't be available right away from reading the comments in this thread. This time I spoke to a man who actually knew what he was talking about, had a schedule in front of him and confirmed that the channels were not available to me at this time. Oh well.

Oxnard is set for September 10 of this year. Only four cities went live today. Some even have to wait until December.

There is not a single standard definition camera at these olympics, everything is recorded in HD format. The Olympics will be broadcast on NBC and NBC HD, USA and USA HD, and Universal HD.

I have Universal HD because I have the HD package for $5. I have NBC HD because it comes with my digital cable.

But they are launching 12 channels next week, and I am PRAYING they will at least launch USA HD before early august, so we can watch all of the Olympics in HD....

It would be a great boast for Time Warner also. "We broadcast all of the Olympics in HD".

But I have a feeling they could care less about the olympics, or they would have launched USA HD with the channels on the 9th already :(

From what I understand, the channels will be launched on the 9th of july for all areas that were TWC prior to the 2006 comcast/adelphia buy-out.... I guess they just haven't quite upgraded the networks they bought yet.

Blame that on FSN. They only have content on there occasionally. It's the same for any provider carrying that channel.

Most of those Spanish channels they've carried for years, they're just grouped into a couple of tiers now and marketed more. About 13 of them are new and would basically be carried in one or two 6 Mhz QAM channels.
