| [Speed] Inconsistent Speed in Chicago
I seem to be getting between 2Mbps and my rated 11Mbps on the RCN IL speedtest here in Chicago.
I am worried about getting the 20mbit plan, as a friend of mine already has the 20mbit and is having troubles reaching that speed as well.
Is this a Chicago-area issue with all customers? Or is it just that the network is overloaded in a few areas? |

1 edit | reply to nick47532 There is more to it than that. RCN has had routing problems in both DC and Chicago lately and I know someone in a new development here in Chicago where RCN just dropped a node last year and they are having speed issues starting just in the past few weeks.
It isn't like RCN doesn't have fiber in this city should it want to expand. It has exclusive access to the CTA L Right-of-ways. Lets hope once they start rolling out to more buildings due to that FCC ruling they spend some money using the fiber that was laid down a few years ago. But from the way it sounds they cannot handle what they have now. |

| reply to nick47532 I have been having some issues too.
I recently signed up for Mach 20 in Chicago. When I first got it last week, the speed was great. Tonight I can't even finish the download speed test at il.speedtest.rcn.net. My upspeed seems to be fine.
Here are my results:
Down: 0.09 Mbps Up: 1.35 Mbps
Anyone know if something is going on? |

| reply to smokinburt my internet went down last night around 10PM chicago time. This morning it came back up, but it's been really slow ever since. i'm getting something like 0.2MBbs downstream right now according to il.speedtest.rcn.net
I don't know what happened, but coincidentally, my linksys VOIP adapter got fried at the same time.
It's basically unusable at this point. Has anyone tried contacting RCN to get some $$ back?? |

| reply to nick47532 Yes...there seems to be a network issue right now. For me too, it started late monday night. I had no internet before I left for work this morning but it came back online during the day today. However, it's running in the ballpark of dial-up speed. FYI for those who are having the same problem.

@rcn.com | reply to nick47532 Same problems in Lakeview. Is this common for RCN? I'm almost ready to go comcast or back to DSL. |

| reply to nick47532 I just got RCN internet and Cable installed today to replace my incredibly crappy Comcast connection. At first is was rockin around 15Mbps but around 1pm it went to .33. While I was watching the cubs game on WGN HD the signal went out for that channel. So I went from one crappy service to another. Gotta love it when sales people outright lie to you. REDICULOUS. |

| reply to nick47532 I've been having issues as well for the last ~30 hours or so. Monday evening I lost all connectivity for about six hours. Tonight (Tuesday) I've been getting 10-20% packet loss from about 6pm CDT onwards. Doesn't seem to be improving yet. FYI I'm in Uptown, but I'm willing to bet the issue is further up their pipeline and not related to the local distribution...I can ping the first and second hop beyond my machine without any packet loss, but beyond that it starts to drop packets.
I've been an RCN customer for almost two years, and this is one of the very few issues I've had...RCN will get it fixed soon enough. Don't switch to Comcast, you'll hate yourself for doing so! |

| reply to nick47532 Everything looks resolved from my end. My latest speed test is 19.46down/1.54up.
I also second the motion to NOT switch. This is honestly the first problem I can recall in the past 4 years. My girlfriend had Comcast and I swear she was on the phone with them every other week.
If anyone is listening - thanks RCN! |

@acgme.org | I noticed I was having a problem this morning. I didn't do a speed test, but a ping showed a 75% packet loss. I'm in the Streeterville area. As of 10:00am this morning the issue has not been resolved.

3 edits | reply to nick47532 I can't even connect with rcn now. I have to use my cell phone to access the internet. The modem syncs up but that all. I cannot access any pages. When i called up rcn, i was told it was an outage and to not use the internet for 24 hours. Try again tomorrow she said. I hope this gets resolved before tomorrow! Anybody from rcn know what is going ok? It's been over 12 hours now.

Edit: back up and running again. Thankfully it was fixed before tomorrow!
