Re: OpenSUSE 11 is released Anyone else having trouble downloading the DVD image from software.opensuse.org?
When I try to download it with Firefox, it gives me a 0 byte ISO file. Tried it on several machines and even Windows and Linux. Same results each time. -- Don't touch that, it's the history eraser button you fool! |

| If your neighbour is capable of using google to get thru the rough spots he should do OK as a user.
Are you asking if he can handle the install himself? While he could probably manage a simple install of the defaults by himself, you might want to at least assist him with the install if he runs into any hardware issues such as wireless cards, printers and scanners.
Definitely point him at this forum for additional support as it's still one of the friendliest linux forums around. Very little "RTFM" happening in here.
Anyway from a user standpoint, using SuSE is one of the easier alternatives to Windows out there. From an admin standpoint, YaST is an incredibly powerful and useful admin tool, but you still need some sort of grasp of the fundamental concepts of computing to be able to use it effectively.
Then again, I've set up SuSE boxes for friends and relatives, taught them how to keep their systems patched and had to do virtually no admin work on their machines for years at a time. Once a linux box is set up properly for a novice user, it becomes pretty much bulletproof.
I'd strongly advise setting up the machine for your friend, showing him how to access the updater and nothing more, and then acting as admin on his behalf whenever he does any hardware upgrades. |

| reply to RobNyc Yes, the install process is very easy. "Complex" things such as hostname, disable firewall aren't presented unless you perform an advanced install.
Default now is to use Ubuntu-style user accounts with no root but at least its very easy and straightforward to disable. -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

| yeah, that threw me when I first installed it on this box. I missed the section where it asks you if you want to use the user account you setup for admin tasks, and wondered what my root password was! Caught it when I reinstalled it, so no biggie.... -- One man's Magic is another man's Engineering. |

 | reply to donoreo Yes, I got hit by the Samba thing too. I noticed in the Release Candidates that only YAST seemed to work, but expected that to be ironed out by the time it was released. But yes, it seems YAST is the only working method now (short of manually editing smb.conf) of configuring Samba. Neither swat or even the kde configuration (which used to be quite nice). |
