time to ditch TV

I have with Charter what they call their "mini-basic" tier which is just the broadcast channels + PEG + CSPAN. They do away with that and it's bye bye cable for me. I have my computer wired into my TV and already much of what I watch is done that way. Just saw today that The Daily Show and Jon Stewart are now available on hulu.com. Screw the cable companies the value of what they offer in their "extended basic" package ain't worth the $60 plus a month they charge.

I remember not too long ago, in order to watch CBS in New York City (Channel 2), you had to get cable as the signal was not clear with regular antennas.

Thank God for having more than one sibling (hey, stand right there, a little to the left, good signal!).

A) Digital costs more.

B) The TV's I've seen displaying digital are full of digital artifacts, and such (especially those hooked up to Charter's Digital). It looks harsher and worse to my eyes than good old analog. The picture of digital may be more detailed but it's also a lot less forgiving of problems.

The VHF-L frequencies (Channels 2 - 6) but most specifically channels 2 and 3 are VERY tough to receive nowadays using rabbit-ear antennas due to their much longer wavelength and propensity to be blocked by buildings and other large objects.

Even where I live (about 7 air miles from ESB) get a fair amount of multi-path interference on analog Channels 2 and 4 even with a 12' outdoor antenna.

Thankfully, the digital allocation for Channel 2 (Ch. 56, for now to revert to Ch. 33) comes in perfectly well with no interference or pixelation whatsoever.

not to mention the static background image - I hate compression

Analog cable works great with my MythTV box. Eventually I might have to spring for a HDHomeRun, even though my Linux hardware is far too wussy to play HD content at the moment.
