| Commercial Electic IC cans
I have installed several Commercial Electric IC cans. The fiberglass insulation was plced against the cans. I have put compact flouescent lamps (30 watt ?) in the cans. The thermal protection device shuts them down after about 15 minutes. Can I use CFL? or should I switch to the PAR lamps.

| even though CFLs don't give off as much heat, they are NOT rated for use in sealed fixtures. there may be soem made for it, but most will tell you not to use them in a recessed light if it has a lens. -- Lack of Preparation on YOUR Part does NOT Constitute an Emergency on Mine! |

| lack of airflow around the bulb results in the ballast(that is why the base is so thick) getting too hot and burning up. also why it is tripping his thermal protection. -- Lack of Preparation on YOUR Part does NOT Constitute an Emergency on Mine! |

| reply to pjm What lamps are you using? I have 8 nVision R30 flood type CFL's installed in IC housings in the kitchen and they're often left on for hours at a time with no problems. As others have stated, most CFL's are not rated to be used pointing down.
