| FairPoint - annual contract and speed
Technically I'm no longer a Verizon customer as I live in New Hampshire but thought I'd post this little tidbit.
I've been a longtime Verizon ADSL customer, each year at this time I'd renew my contact to get lower rate rather then pay month by month. Called FairPoint to do that and was told they no longer have annual contracts. I've been "grandfathered" at the old rate of $29.99 plus FairPoint will no longer collect $1.45 Tax recovery fee.
Rep mentioned new customers typically pay higher rate because "contract" price was higher typically $32.95.
The other part of my annual DSL renewal ritual is to ask for upgrade from 1500/384 to 3000/768. Each year my house is either magically farther away or closer to the Central Office.
Rep said my distance was listed as 12,600 feet(with Bridged taps)and official limit for 3000/768 is 10,000 feet. However system allows him to request upgrade (at no cost just like Verizon). Speed increase won't happen until Monday, I'm skeptical but have nothing to loose.
Will post back then.
Other FairPoint customers may want to look into what appears to be a more liberal speed upgrade policy.

Get that tap cut, since it looks like you'll have DSL for some time. |

Interesting tidbit it seems Verizon was a lot further along with FIOS then even FairPoint was aware. Verizon kept a tight lid on expansion plans in case the deal fell through.
Rumor has it FairPoint may actually expand FIOS (will have to rename it of course) in urban areas while deploying DSL in more rural areas.
We will see what happens.

Will wonders never cease.
Sure enough today, Monday, modem is syncing at 3360/864. Margin is down quite a bit as expected to 24/10 dB from 31/23 dB and transmit power is up. Not too bad considering the horrendous rainstorm we are having. Did a couple of near and distant speed benchmarks, seeing 2875/725 kbp/s. Was hoping to be upgraded to ADSL2+, as it improves performance over long lines, but that did not happen. Hopefully sync will be stable and I will be able to enjoy faster speed.

When I had SDSL was quoted distance of about 10,000 feet. Figure tap is somewhere between 1-2,000 feet. Getting rid of it will help stats some. I was a little worried margin would be so bad they would immediately revert me back to 1500/384. Knock on wood - I'm a happy camper.

| reply to tschmidt 24/10 doesn't sound bad... try getting FastPath, on the Direct forum. Might add some 'snap' to your connection. BTW, not that it matters, but some house cleaning of inside wire MIGHT knock up that upstream margin, and boost the sync to the proper 864 K range. Cheers on the upgrade, a333 |

Inside wiring is pretty clean. Installed a Corning/Siecor POTS/DSL splitter years ago with Cat 5 to modem. Performed a half-ringerectomy as the Splitter has one built in after the low pass filter.
Speed test probably under-reported true speed a little as there are four PCs and a server on our home LAN. Too lazy to either kill the connection or turn them off.
Over the weekend I'll physically disconnect non-DSL inside wire. Had a problem a couple of years ago where corrosion on a couple of jacks unbalanced the line enough to kill DSL without having any effect on Voice.
