Calling all doggie owners (where pooch is over 50 LBS)

I'm looking for VERY inexpensive flea/tick drops that don't make my doggie or my house smell all froo-froo.

So far, I've tried Bio-Spot.

Puppy wouldn't talk to me for two days when I put that crap on him, and ALL I smelled in the house was that stuff for two days......

This is the first year I've used that stuff (don't want a collar), cos the ticks are very bad this year. already found four on the Collie.

We use Frontline on our 100lb Akita and it works fine. I don't notice a smell unless I get right next to the application. We use to use Advantage but it caused my sinuses to run like an open faucet. The Frontline causes me a bit of stuffiness but only if I play with the dog the first couple of days after the application.

There are also shots that they can give the dog which will ward off fleas. You may want to consider going that route as well.

Was a Frontline Plus user for many years..but switched to K-9 Advantix ..less expensive, and keeps mosquitos off too.

Doesn't smell at all

Have you tried 1-800-Pet-MEDS?

They'lll match any price and always offer coupons

We use front line and get it from entirelypets.com

It doesn't smell as much as advantage and dissipates pretty quickly. I find that if you put it on and take the dog for a walk, the smell goes away and the dog isn't distracted by it either.

Thanks all. I figured that since I need to buy more before the beginning of July, I'd ask for others' opinions first.

The vet I work for recommends Frontline Plus, that's all we sell. However, personally, I've used Advantix also which seemed to work fine.

You get 4 doses of Advantix compared to 3 (or 6) with Frontline. The Advantix 4 dose is more expensive than the Frontline 3 dose (approx $56+ compared to $43+), but you get a 4th dose, so six of one, half dozen of the other. Prices could vary in your area, but that gives you an idea.

None of them smell great, but that usually goes away rather quickly. Also, many dogs don't like the application as it feels cold (I've got one we have to hold down to apply, as soon as he sees us coming with it, he's hopping around, trying to get away. Odd you brought this topic up, we just dosed him earlier today, heh...).

And yes, the ticks are VERY bad this year, so it's a good idea to use something, whether the dog likes it or not.

Frontline didn't work on my pooch.
Advantix worked great.
I use it on both my mutts, one is 70 lbs, the other is 30 lbs.

We can use this stuff on our pets, and it is effective.
I have always wondered why we humans can't use it...

I can stand brute force, but brute reason is quite unbearable. There is something unfair about its use. It is hitting below the intellect.

We have constant trouble with fleas unfortunately. We have to black labs who are 80lbs and just over a year old. We've tried all sorts of flea solutions but have yet to find one that works. We've tried frontline, advantix and various types of flea collars, all with little success. We have a huge backyard and I wonder if it has something to do with it.

It's dry south Texas grass, is there any chance that is the major source of trouble and if so are there types of protections for the yard?

I've used Frontline for the last 3 years now and have had good success with it, on my 55 lb. lab pit mix.

NOw that you mention it, there are YARD sprays, but if your yard is really THAT large, it will cost a small fortune.

I am sure there are huge regional differences. Being from a dry region (Southern California), I may be at an advantage. At least that is what I tell myself.

'Cause we're not dogs?

I give my dog Novox (generic Rimadyl) for his arthritis, would you want to take that too?

Veterinary medications are specifically for animals, and aren't safe for human use. Works the other way with many human medications also.
