[AK] Short trip to Anchorage-- any suggestions?

I'm going to be in Anchorage at a conference for about a week (this coming week). Does anyone have any tips to share about good places to eat and things to do? I will be near the Egan convention center in northern Anchorage. I'm coming from NYC, but I would find outdoorsy sorts of things fun too.
Thanks!

I'm from Boston and visited Alaska in 2004. My trip was 10 days of fun, no work. If you have a full day to play, the train from Anchorage to Whittier, the Glacier Discovery, is a nice way to see some of the beauty that is Alaska. Or try the Coastal Classic from Anchorage to Seward.
This is, imo as a Boston boy, the perfect time to be a visitor in Alsaka 'cuz it's almost never dark.

Do you know what hotel you're staying at? If you're staying at the Hilton, Sheraton, or Captain Cook, then you are staying in the downtown area. You are short walks from Platinum Jaxx, a great place to eat. You could take a walk down to Ship Creek and eat at the "Bridge". The Bridge is a restaurant that spans across Ship Creek. From your dining table you can watch anglers fish for king salmon. After your dinner, you could take a nice walk along the Coastal Trail. Across the street from the Egan Center is Town Square. It's a tiny park, but its main attraction are the flowers. This time of year, they are exquisite. I think the Saturday Market begins its summer season this weekend. If you want authentic local food such as salmon and halibut, that's the place to check out.

If you are staying in any of the Midtown hotels (their names escape me) great food is nearby. There is Sea Galley, The Peppermill, Applebys, Cattle Company, Golden Corral (which I love, btw), and Lone Star restaurants. Also within walking distance are popular eating establishments The Moose's Tooth and the Bear Tooth. The Bear Tooth houses a discount theatre, so you can see a movie and eat dinner while the movie is on the big screen.

As far as things to do, the hotels all have literature on things to do and places to see. The Anchorage Daily News (local newspaper) publishes things to do daily. I highly recommend you get a rental car and head south on the Seward Highway. The Seward Highway has been listed by the Park Service as a National Scenic Byway. You may be lucky enough to see Beluga Whales or even a bore tide.

Have fun while you are here! I posted a short pictorial in this very forum last summer. Pictures can be found here: »[AK] Owlbet will be your tour guide today
