Fire check-ins

Wildfires have erupted in the hot, dry weather. The governor's office is saying that lightning had sparked about 400 fires in Northern California.

Please check in and let us know how you all are faring.

We have the Wild Fire in the ridge line on the Napa/Solano County border above Green Valley. So far not too much smoke damage here as the prevailing wind is blowing it to the east roughly parallel to I-80. (Our home is 5 miles south of I-80). Keeping an eye on it, was checking during the night, it was quite visible. The terrain up there is mixed grass and oaks, and it will be difficult to contain the spread due to the rugged rural terrain and lack of natural fire breaks between there and Lake Berryessa, it could follow the ridge on the west side of Suisun Valley.

This morning when I got up and opened the patio door around 6:30, the smoke smell was really strong. It's not so bad right now. It reminded me of the fall when ppl are burming their leaves.

Winds shifted late this afternoon to a sea breeze. Cleared the smoke out (could not see the mountains) and pushed it back towards Napa.
The sun is a bit more yellow, but not brown anymore.

We're doing good here in Redwood Valley, it's just so smokey, it's been giving me headaches. We have one burning about 10 miles west of us near Orr Springs Resort, they have evacuated the resort and about 20 homes, and there is a 1400 acre fire buring near Navarro, as well as several, smaller fires. The best site I have found for very accurate, on the spot coverage is the CDF (California Depatrment of Forestry and Fire Protection) site-
»cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/in···t_id=277

Edit-For our area:

"Mendicino Unit: 90 fires have been reported for a total of more than 5,000 acres. The Orr Fire is 200 acres and has evacuations of the Orr Springs Resort and 20 homes in the area, the Navarro Fire is 1,400 acres and 5% contained, the Foster Fire is 60 acres with 0% containment, the Table Mtn. Fire is 1,000 acres and 5% contained, the Mallo Pass Fire is 600 acres, and the Juan Creek fires (2)are at 100 acres each. There are 8 additional fires at 30 acres each."

The weather here has been pretty mild the past couple of days, it started really cooling off Saturday Afternoon, and today we didn't even need our air conditioner, the winds have been light as well, I am sure that is helping the fire fighters immensely. We have a CDF Unit, Howard Forest up on top of Ridgewood Summit about 8 miles north of us, they have been busy as heck in all of this.

CDF site does not update very quickly, shows 8:00 AM Sunday information tonight.

I was in north Fairfield this afternoon, had ash dropping like snow this afternoon there.
I figure places like Vacaville and Winters are having real air quality issues from this fire. Radio KUIC says 35% contained, over 3500 acres burned so far.

The Bay Area news stations don't ever do a good job of covering our area, so that's why I rely more on the CDF, Ukiah Daily Journal and Santa Rosa Press Democrat sites for more local info.

There are several burning in Butte County, with two near Concow and Magalia that are the most threatening at this time.

Down here in the valley, we are OK but dealing with smoke.

The smoke is really bad here this morning (though it's cool, about 46), the smoke is hanging heavy outside and the sunrise is super red, this smokey air is giving us all irritated eyes and me headaches and you can't even see the VERY nearby hills and mountains. This is nothing though compared to the 1988 fires in Yellowstone, we were up there during those camping in nearby Island Park, ID, and the smoke in West Yellowstone was so thick you could cut it with a knife.

Speaking of Yellowstone, this is EXACTLY the same situation that started those big fires, a abnormally dry spring with many dry lightning strikes. We went into the park a few times as we always did every summer, and one time we got stuck on the road out of West Thumb waiting for the crews to knock down the fire enough to reopen the road, and another day we got out not too long before the firestorm came over Old Faithful. Sad and destructive as it was, it is something that happens there every few hundred years, and is nature's way of renewing the forests.

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowston···_of_1988

Our highs in Redwood Valley (around 1000 feet elevation) are forecast to be in the mid to upper 80's all week, with lows in the mid to upper 40's, cooler as you get higher of course. I don't see any more lightning for the week, or major winds, and with the cooler temps that should help the firefighters get a handle on all these blazes. I'll be glad to see that happen, the strong smell of smoke is everywhere outside, in the garage, some in the house, it's almost impossible to get rid of short of sealing the house up like a ziploc bag.

Here in Mendocino, Humboldt and Trinity Counties alone they recorded over 2000 cloud to ground strikes, it was intense here I can tell you! We had lightning all Friday night, one strike so close to the house that the thunder clap came withing a millisecond of the lightning (the flash was as bright as that from an atomic bomb going off), it shook the windows and doors hard and almost felt like a small quake, and we even some very brief periods of heavy rain and hail. Check to see if they have issued any health advisories there dadkins, our county board issued an advisory for all those with respitory problems to limit outside activity today. A couple of good articles on the local fires and smoke- »www.ukiahdailyjournal.com/ci_9665579 »www.ukiahdailyjournal.com/ci_9665579

Is the smoke pretty thick there Dadkins? It is way thick this afternoon here, it's like being in the fog, only this fog smells like smoke The sun is shining, but it's so diffused it makes it seem like evening, and our beautiful blue skies are a dull, smokey grey

Stay safe out there guys, and pray for the firefighters.

More like hundreds of fires My eyes are burning and breathing too much of it makes you start coughing, I haven't been in this much smoke since the Yellowstone Fires of 1988, though the smoke from those was even worse.

Our fire out here is now 60% contained, 4100 acres so far. One injury.

Smoke is worse tonight than yesterday due to much lower wind conditions.
