RR Conductor : They kept Yellowstone open during the mega fires there in 1988, I was there (and camping nearby in Island Park, ID)and never at any time was anybody in danger or threatened, they did an AWESOME job. You have to remember too, Yellowstone is HUGE, and although the fires were the big ones they get about every 600 years, most of the park DID NOT burn.

One problem now is not so much the fires, but people building further and further into the wilderness, and into fire prone areas. When that happens, they fight every little fire, and after a while you have a major imbalance, with a buildup of fuel just waiting to go off. In the case of Yellowstone, fire is part of the natural cycle, the Lodgepole Pine so dominant there actually only open their cones after a fire, spreading seeds and starting the cycle of life anew.

Our fire situation (Mendocino Lightning Complex) is 100% contained now, and CalFire has closed their "fire command" for it in Ukiah. The cool and moist air we've had the past several days has helped a lot, it barely hit 80 today in Redwood Valley. Barring anymore crazy lightning events like we had, the rest of the season, knock on wood, should be much quieter.

Edit-1.2 Million Acres, or 36% of the park burned-

"A total of 248 fires started in greater Yellowstone in 1988; 50 of those were in Yellowstone National Park. Despite widespread misconceptions that all fires were initially allowed to burn, only 31 of the total were; 28 of these began inside the park. In the end, 7 major fires were responsible for more than 95% of the burned acreage. Five of those fires were ignited outside the park, and 3 of them were human-caused fires that firefighters attempted to control from the beginning. More than 25,000 firefighters, as many as 9000 at one time, attacked Yellowstone fires in 1988, at a total cost of about $120 million. Thankfully, the fires killed no park visitors and no nearby residents. Outside the park, two firefighters were killed, one by a falling tree and one while piloting a plane transporting other personnel."

You want to know what finally put the fire out? An early September snowfall, nature started it and nature ended it, the Good Lord did a pretty good job in designing this ole Earth ;)

RR Conductor : I've been wearing a mask outside when doing any work, that helps a lot. Also, we have the AC going during the day, and the fan without the AC at night, so that helps filter the air too. It's better in the higher terrain, but those of us in the valleys are really getting socked with the smoke.

I found a very cool video on the Ukiah Daily Journal website, it shows how to make a filter for your house for under 30 bucks! You just get one of those box fans at Big Lots or Wal-Mart, tape a 3M filter (must be rated for smoke) the same size to it, and voila, you have yourself a filter! They show it after running a while, and it's amazing to see what it traps. Friday nights lightening storms were spatacular. I've never seen anything like it in my life. Not realizing at the time, the damage it was going to do. Sat. we were told the fire was withen a couple miles, so we packed up some things and headed for Fort Bragg to stay at my daughters house. We went back in the morning to check on the house. At that time the Comptche fire dept. was at the end of the driveway. They said they were making sure that the two structures were safe and were assigned there to keep watch. I would like to thank them. This is Wed. morning and as of last night the house is still standing. We got word that the fire got less then 1/2 mile from the house. Not sure yet this morning. Please keep praying for the fires to go out. Thanks.....
Also I would like to comment on the news stations on my Cable. I live in Forestville, by Santa Rosa and NO LOCAL CHANNELS HAVE ANY NEWS ABOUT MENDOCINO. IT REALLY BOTHERS ME. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH ABC, NBC, CBS, AND FOX NEWS!!!!!!!!!
