freesurfspain.com / freenetspain.com - anyone used them?

Hi all,

Does anyone know anything about this service - is it genuine? www.freesurfspain.com

I called the number and was called back by a local agent.
I asked if there was coverage at my house, which I was assured there was. I was told that an installation would be €400 (even though no one had been to my house, and the web site states installation is €195).

When I asked how the sustem works I was told that I would be connecting via a free Wifi hotspot but using a larger parabolica aerial as the hotspot is 12kms from my house.

I asked what speed I could get, and i was told "broadband speed". I further enquired exactly what speed, and the agent, who was sounding a little confused, told me that it would be upto 54Mbs.

Has anyone heard of or used this service.
I am currently on a wireless system that costs 45€ a month for a 1.Mb connection (although I rarely get above 512Kb).

Also, any advice on optimizing a Wireless system thet uses a Smart AirBridge via a company called Riosat would also be appreciated.

it looks a bit dodgy to me- especially if the price of installation rises when you actually speak to them. Also it is only in the Costa del Sol area so I assume you are there.

The speed would not be 54mbps - that would be the speed your computer connects to a wireless router within your house, not to the external internet- that would most likely be 1mbps or 512kps. If you are connecting to a free hotspot why do you have to pay a monthly charge? or do you? Also a free hotspot will likely not allow downloading music or films should you wish to do so...

Try www.iberbanda.com - I use them and am pretty satisfied with it.

Thansk for the reply,

Exactly what I thought when he quoted the speed at 54Mb!! and this is from the "expert" field agent. He was probably selling air-con and sat tv a month ago!

Iberbanda is available in my area. Do they restrict you in any way - download speed, P2P, skype, Limewire, MSN, etc etc?

The company I am with, RIOSAT, are quite good, but I keep getting my d/l throttled.
Well at least I think I do, unless my machine needs a tweak. I have ran tweak guide here, and increases the number of half-open connection (using Win XP patch from dvllord).
Last week I was getting d/l of around 1.5Mb - really quick, but now im struggling to get above 256Kb.
Maybe I should post in WISP forum for tweak advice.

Anyway - many thanks for the reply
