| [TWC] Trying to get RR HSI without pissing off my mother
I've got a rather unique situation here. I just moved to Hemet, CA, and am currently living with my rather old fashion mother. She wants nothing to do with technology, and even thinks that my DSL service I currently have is going to show up on her phone bill, even though I'm using a third party DSL provider who I pay directly, and the DSL equipment is Covad's, not Verizon's. anyway, I'd like to get a backup internet connection in case the DSL should go down, and RR services my area. The problem however, is that my mother has basic cable TV only, and I don't want to add any more services to her cable account which even if I payed her extra for it, she wouldn't go for it. Therefore I need to get an account exclusively in my name, which I pay for fully. Since I live at a location where some form of cable service already exists, I'm guessing any services in addition to basic cable would be added to the existing account holder's bill, which I don't want. So can I get residential high speed internet in my name here, or will I have to go all out and get a business account? If I need to get a business account to get HSI in my name, that's fine, I've considered doing that for better upload anyway, so where would I go to go about checking the business offerings for HSI cable internet in my area? If I can get residential HSI, how would I ensure it is in my name, not my mother's, as the service would be at the same address? Thanks. |

I would approach it from the perspective that you are a renter. The only problem with that is that you will need written permission from the landlord, and it appears that she is a bear to deal with.
Good luck! |

| reply to kd6cae kp answered it best. I rented out a house to a family, the older son wanted his own dedicated cable line into his bedroom, his parents didnt want internet at all. Long story short, Road Runner contacted me, and i had to give them premission via a contract, i had to fax or mail back to them, giving them premission to run a line into his bedroom.
You should just really just explain it to your mother, also maybe you should try and get 'tech savvy'. Find out some interests she likes, maybe some old movies/tv shows and show her, the fun the internet can be.
Hell my 80year old grandmother loved the internet, this is after she said she would never go on it. I go over, and she was in a AOL chat room, talking to some men
messed up, it was TimeWarner not dsl - fios on the mind! |

| Thanks for the responses. I actually don't plan to be here but probably a few months at most. My mother is as old fashion as it gets, and when I was here before a couple years back, I tried getting cable the normal way, and even when I offered to pay for the extra cost of having the internet when the bill came, she didn't want anything to do with it, and demanded I cancel the service. Her thinking is, if she didn't order it, it shouldn't be on her bill. This is why if I get cable here again, it'll have to be in my name, which as I said I have no problems doing, I'm already working on getting my own phone line so I can make long distance calls and not have my mother complaining. I'm pretty sure I can get RR business internet, but wondered to find out if residential was possible, that's all. |

| reply to kd6cae If it were me and I was only going to be there for a few months, I'd just say "the hell with it" and wait until I got my own place. I don't really understand why you need Road Runner for a backup anyway, especially at place you're only going to be for a few months. Is your DSL service that bad? |
