| Choosing Qwest Modem/Options
I am in the process of moving to Portland, OR and was looking for advice on selecting options for my new Qwest DSL service. I have an existing router that I want to continue to use because it has EVDO backup. The 3Mb tier is available. I am not opposed to ICS. I have 3 boxes and a laptop spread throughout a 3 story house. My router is robust and I see no problems getting a signal in any room.
Will I be able go with the "1 computer" modem and utilize ICS? I really want to avoid their wireless router options and I am willing to purchase a compatible DSL modem from sources other than Qwest.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. -- WB ProPak, Beam 12 Linksys WRT54G Router, 2.4G P4 Northwood, 1024 PC2700, 2X160 Maxtor Raid, Enermax 480, and 2 other home-made monsters |

| Does your existing router support PPPoE?
If so, I would just go with the Actiontec modem, put it in bridged mode, and let your router do the work. That's my current setup and it works great. The Actiontec is a good modem, it is just the router functions in it that aren't the greatest (and those are disabled in bridged mode). -- Don't touch that, it's the history eraser button you fool! |

| reply to freightliner First of all; make ICS an option ONLY if it's the very last option on the planet. You take the DSL modem (It's external) and you feed it into your network router. (Assuming it is a typical consumer router with a WAN input). You then feed your PC's from the router. whether it's wired or wireless is up to you. Don't use wireless from the DSL modem.
Most/All Qwest compatible DSL modems are also routers. You could simply connect the modem/router to a switch and feed all your PC's. Personally, I think the modems aren't bad, but their router functions suck. I prefer using just the modem and feeding a REAL router. Then out to the PC's. Later... Mike....
P.S. I suggest getting the actiontec GT-701 models. I am not a fan of the 2wire with wireless they try and sell. |

Thanks, - geoff |

The "one computer" notation is a misnomer. It just means it has one LAN port. Your other router can be the "one computer".
If you do use the router functions of a DSL modem, most times you can use a plain ol' switch/hub to add additional ports. Since you have a router, that'll do too. |
