Ping and Speed Problems

I've posted before about problems with my isp but this one is really getting on my nerves and i have basically no other choice of internet except this. here is one of my other threads »oversubscribed tower? if you want to learn more about my isp.

Lately i have been having speed problems and ping problems. My ping should be anywhere around 50 to 80 at a Chicago server but that rarely happens. My speeds are 5/384 which i sometimes get but that is in the late nights and early mornings. When my ping is bad it seems to hop up on the 5th hop it goes from about 20 ping to 100+.

i think it is too many people going to that one place and the isp cannot take it. I will run ping plotter for 24 hours and post the results. I had a technician come out yesterday but all he did was take the continuator off to help the signal. It looked like it helped because on the isp's speedtest i was getting 4 to 5.2 mbps but then after they left i went and did a test and got only about 1 mbps on speedtest.net while on the other one i was getting awesome speeds.

This is a Counter Strike server i play on frequently in Chicago.

As you can see during the evening and afternoons my ping and speeds are terrible. All the problems with my ping occur on the 5th hop which is still in the town i live in (Laurel Montana). Then from there on out the ping is bad but before the 5th hop my ping averages normally.

Then sometimes my ping can be pretty good but my speeds will be less than 1 mbps when i have 5/384 package. So what can you guys tell me about what is happening so i can explain to my isp because the next technician wont be out here until 2 weeks and i'd like to know a good idea on what he should be looking at since they guess every time they come here to fix a problem. Thanks-Quento

looks to me like its a problem between your WISP and their level 1 provider, Level3 in this case, possibly oversubscription on the WISP's part or bad network management

hmm what is my level 1 provider is it cable montana since that is where the latency gets wacked out? It might be that and oversubscription.

I forgot to mention they are upgrading to fiber optic for their whole backbone system so it might have something to do with that since they are probably working on it. It's suppose to be done early July im guessing now.

Sounds to me like they are maxing out their upstream connection to whoever their ISP is (seems to be Level3). That's probably why they're upgrading their internet connectivity.

I'm willing to bet that when they complete that upgrade, it'll be working MUCH better.

had a technician come today. He was telling me that the fiber optic upgrade should be done by next Wednesday because for some reason Bresnan isn't plugging the things into the fiber optic thing or something like that lol. He also said that there might be a problem at the tower but i am not sure. Anyways i hope once they upgrade everything gets back to normal or even better.
