That very much makes them a monopoly. They and Comcast create a veritable oligopoly by controlling the two broadband options: DSL and cable. If you seriously think satellite is a real option, you must have more money than Croesus and less common sense than Paris Hilton.

A monopoly is defined as a company who provides the only option for a certain service. In this case, it's broadband internet. You are splitting hairs by breaking it down to DSL, cable, wireless, fiber, etc.

On a side note, In a sense Verizon is likely not your only option for DSL, as Verizon was deregulated sometime ago to be required to share their phone lines with other providers. Albeit, if you call a DSL provider, they will be piggy-backed off of Verizon's physical structure, which would do you no good. I digress.

The fact is, is that Comcast, Verizon, Satellite, and wireless are all broadband connections. Therefore, you have a choice. It's not Verizon's fault that the sat providers' rates are beyond what you are willing to pay. It is still competition.

Furthermore, let's say Verizon actually pulls fiber into your town. They would be the only FTTH service in the area as well. Therefore, according to your thinking, they would still be a monopoly, and would be as much over two services instead of just one. And, BTW, once they service your home with fiber, you may not be able to even go back to their cheaper DSL service if you wanted to. Let's say times get tough later and you can't afford your 20/5 connection anymore and you want to downgrade to the $14 DSL connection. If they killed your copper during the FiOS install, which they do a lot, you would be screwed. Then you'd be back here raging more about a company you hate, but somehow want to do business with anyway.

As far as them advertising service that isn't in your area, that is obviously not cool at all. But your understanding of monopolies is a little skewed. Don't worry, though, there are a lot of people who lived here all of their lives that don't understand it either. ;)

Oh, and one last note: Underground facilities are not necessarily better than aerial facilities, other than underground being a lot tougher and more expensive to build and service.

fruhead : ok, I'm from Montclair and, though I'm hesitant to stop someone from dumping on Verizon (they're not my favorite company in the universe), I have to say to the OP that Glen Ridge is all easement-fed, no streetside poles, and about four blocks wide. If you're living on one of the 'border-streets' with either Montclair, Bloomfield, Orange or Brookdale Park, you probably wouldn't have seen Verizon trucks or construction contractors pulling fiber - it would have been coming in from the Montclair or Bloomfield side. If, on the other hand, Verizon has ONLY fed those border streets and not gone into the heart of Glen Ridge, it may be due to access problems from the owners of the multi-million-dollar homes with landscaping alone that costs more than my house does. The same problem occurred when Comcast was upgrading the system in Glen Ridge and Montclair (think of running fiber behind the homes on Hillside Ave or Upper Mountain Ave in Montclair - talk about a nightmare!).

Just because Verizon doesn't have a presence AT your house doesn't mean they don't have a presence ANYWHERE in the town.

(Holy crap - did I just defend Verizon? brrrrr...!)

*steps slowly away from computer...calls therapist*

And better yet: Where could I complain about this, because it's false advertisement at best?

My town will never have fiber, because Verizon is a third-world company run by idiots who can't even get DSL to work properly. Telecoms in the US are just plain pathetic all-around. I should move back to Austria...
