1 edit | Modem upgrade from speedtouch home?
Hi everyone,
I've been on sympatico high speed for 5+ years (currently no longer on contract or cap thankfully). My power adapter for the modem I think has succumb to enough heat that it's actually come apart somewhat (the small black area which holds the two prongs has broken off from the rest of the black adapter. Wires still connect to the prongs plugged into the socket so it still works, but they are exposed and thus there is somewhat of a hazard there.
Anyways, reading the FAQs on modems I see that I could probably upgrade to the speedstream 5200 if I wanted to under the basis that I've been using useless technology for years.
3 questions: 1) Is it worth it to upgrade from my speedtouch home usb? I imagine performance wise I would be in the same situation.
2) Would I be able to swing a free upgrade to the 6300 given how long I've been using my old modem without being contacted about upgrading (I get throttled down for p2p and average out 120-180gb/month in upload & download so that could be something to consider here).
3) Most importantly, modem upgrade should not put me back on contract so if that's an issue here, let me know and I will go no further with this.
Thanks for your insights. |

| Sympatico no longer sends out the 6300 modem, they use the 2Wire now and there's a $70 charge for this modem because it's considered a home networking upgrade. You'd be better off asking Sympatico to replace your modem with the SpeedStream 4200, it's newer model than the 5200 and supports ADSL2+ and there is no charge involved.. |

  hmmm no
@videotron.ca | From what I know, the 6300 is adls2+ comapliant and its better than the 4200. |

| reply to kmarkl Are you in need of a "USB" modem or would you be able to use an ethernet modem now. That would be the issue when you call as your modem is no longer available and I am not sure if there is a USB modem supplied now. That would be the first question I would ask...I need a replacement USB modem. -- My Canada includes Quebec. |

| There are no "USB" modems being sent anymore. The 2 Wire doesn't have a usb port and the 6520\5200\4200 are moving to ethernet only. They still come with a usb port but no cable or drivers. This was in trial a few months ago in limited areas. You said Speedtouch Home USB. Is it the speedtouch home (flat and rectangular) or one that looks like a stingray? If it is the rectangular speedtouch home KEEP IT! It doesn't make sense to replace a $300 modem with a $30 modem like the 2Wire. If it is the round one, call in and they'll swap it. Most of the 4200's go to new members and the refurbished 5200's go out as replacement modems. But there are always exceptions. You can't request which one you get either. Best bet is to pick up something on ebay and then it's yours. I would go with the 4200 Ohio model. It's the newest one that came out around the same time as the 2Wire.
Hope this helps. -- Be careful who's toes you step on today, they may be connected to the a$$ you have to kiss tomorrow. (Unknown)

1 edit | Actually you can request either the 4200 or 5200 and Sympatico will send you the one you asked for if it's available. I know a few people who are still Sympatico members and they specified which modem they wanted and they received the one they asked for. The best way to request the modem exchange is through the Sympatico Direct forum if you want to ensure you get a 4200.
Since the power adapter on his Speedtouch Home modem is falling apart, then keeping it is not an option. |

| reply to DKS Let's not split hairs here, the main issue is the posters modem. I stand by my original post. Keep the speedtouch home as long as possible. Ebay should have the power adapters on there somewhere. Better yet, modem and all should be there. Buy it yourself and you solve your problems and if you switch to another ISP it goes with you. I've never tried but firmware upgrades are out there for that modem that adds the functionality of a speedtouch Pro. -- Be careful who's toes you step on today, they may be connected to the a$$ you have to kiss tomorrow. join:2003-02-04 | It's a waste of money buying a power adapter for a modem he doesn't even own! There's absolutely nothing wrong with the SS4200, it's a very good modem. My recommendation is to do a modem exchange through Sympatico and request the 4200. |
