I decided to give AstraWeb a try with the $15/Month "Unlimited DSL" Pricing Plan. Retention was 128 Days when I signed up, but it's 143 Days now, according to their website. 20 connections, SSL, servers in the US and Europe. I can get 1200 kB/s download speeds with 11 connections at any time, day or night. I mostly download stuff late at night though, so the testing wasn't extensive. Anyway, it seems like a good service. I might go with the $39/ 3 Month plan when I renew. Works out to $13 a month for unlimited downloads. Not bad at all.
Whoever mentioned AstraWeb earlier in the thread, Thanks.
Edit: Just found a better deal for AstraWeb, $11/ Month: »Re: astraweb vs. powerusenet -- I got a lover and yeah she shows me how, to understand, yeah to understand I got a brother and well he shows me how, to make amends, yeah to make amends with it "Meatplow" - Stone Temple Pilots |

Yes, I got the 50 GB block.
For the record, providers that offer block accounts include:
• NewsgroupDirect • Usenet-News • Astraweb • BlockNews.net |

dcurrey Premium join:2004-06-29 | reply to kludge You didn't say the size of block. Hopefully you got the 50 gig block. That would be $11.96 less than $1 month.
Given you usage level that would be your best bet.

| reply to Prodeje79 I went with NewsgroupDirect »www.newsgroupdirect.com, using the 20% discount code.
I rarely download more than 2 GB per month, so it is much more cost efficient to get a block rate. NewsgroupDirect looked like it had the best rate, plus you get SSL, 20 connections, and good retention. They are using Highwinds for their back-end provider.
Unfortunately I didn't find out until after signing up that it expires after 1 year. |

I've been using Easynews for over six years now and even I can say that for price there are better options for most people. At this stage I'm still there because of the amount of rollover gigs I have and the global search which is helpful if you know what you're looking for. |

| reply to Prodeje79 As it so happens, I have a dial-up account with my local telco (Cincinnati Bell) in addition to RR Turbo ('why' you ask? multiple reasons...)
Out of curiosity, I checked their news service and it seems they contract with usenetserver.com. Pointed my client at it, used my dial-up account id, and was able to download via RR...
Looks like I have *another* reason to keep that dial-up account around... |

| reply to Prodeje79 Hmmp. After a few months of non_Usenet usage I discover today that RR stopped offering the service. I come here and what do I see? Users calmly discussing how to add yet another monthly bill; for a service that has always been part and parcel of any and every net acct I've had gong back 20-odd years. Watdafluck! Where's the outrage; the petitions; the reduction in my monthly TWC bill. Hell, I'm up for a class-action against those monopolistic bas***ds. |

dcurrey Premium join:2004-06-29 | reply to hakujin I was thinking of doing something like that. Just buy a block. Wondering if they would still honor the %20 discount upon renewal. From the simple promo they should but you never can tell. They may end up saying that was for recurring plans only. |
