[ Bright House] Am I sharing bandwidth?

I recently upgraded to the "Turbo" service (15/2) in the Indy area and during the nighttime hours it has been anything but. From between approx. 7pm and 11:30pm each weekday evening, the speeds deteriorate to between 2-5Mbps down and around 0.5Mbps up. Outside of these hours, I generally get 13.9Mbps/1.8Mbps.

I had a tech out a few weeks ago and all my equipment checked out ok. I assumed the degradation to the product at night was due to my sharing of the local bandwidth with other users in my neighborhood, etc.

I stopped by the local Brighthouse office today and was able to speak with the Technical Operations Manager. He seemed genuinely concerned and sent a crew out to the neighborhood to analyze what might be going on. He called back later to indicate a few hardware changes were made to help improve consistency of the signal strength during the evening (he seemed to think there is a link between a drop in temps and my slowdown).

At any rate, again tonight the slow speeds persist. Now...this fellow told me that "unlike DSL, I do not share bandwidth with other users...their architecture is such that 'sharing' is non-existent." This is contrary to my understanding of how local cable service operates and I would appreciate input from others who might confirm or refute the information I have been given my the local Technical Operations Manager. Also, if you have any theories related to why my performance at night is suddenly pitiful, I would appreciate hearing them.

Thanks!

Of course it's shared!

It doesn't necessarily mean that it's what causing your problem though.

I had a similar problem at one point, and it turned out to be something on their network acting up. I'm not sure what exactly. Try to get a priority tech out there during the times the problem happens, they can get things fixed quickly.

Also, I hope you mean 0.5 Mbps, and 1.8 Mbps up, not Kbps.

That's backwards. Cable users share a connection to the node where DSL customers do not. So if all of your neighbors get busy on the Internet in the evening, you will all be fighting for available bandwidth.
