I live in Summit, NJ and today I have noticed the addition of the following NJ PEG channels on my FiOS TV:

Channel 22 - South Orange/Maplewood
Channel 26 - Kenilworth
Channel 35 - Cranford

I also noticed color bars on channels 24 and 32 here in Summit, NJ. Unfortunately, Summit's channel (which is currently available on Comcast in my area) is still not on my FiOS TV here yet.
Update on what PEG channels I get in Summit, NJ:

Channel 22 - South Orange/Maplewood
Channels 24 and 32 - Color bars
Channel 26 - Kenilworth
Channels 34 and 36 - Union
Channel 35 - Cranford

I still do not get Summit's PEG channel (which is on Comcast).
Finally, I can get Summit's PEG channel on channel 33. That was quick service.

Okay guys, I need some education. What does PEG stand for and what are PEG channels?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Public, Educational, and Governmental access channels.

Specialized channels for the local school district and government (e.g. townships).

Thank you very much. I've never heard them called that before.

I came from DirecTV and, of course, they weren't available on the satellite system either.

But in this area, historically Comcast ruled and they carried these local channels. When FiOS was negotiated in my township, a very hot topic was would they carry the PEGs. It took a long time (nearly a year) before they were finally carried on FiOS and this was a big issue. Some of the strongest criticism and flack towards granting FiOS approval was caused by their lack of immediate PEGs coverage. (You should have heard it ..."How would we know that school had been cancelled ?!?!?" "How will I know when the next township meeting is ?!??!!") If I look on my local township's web page, it still only lists the Comcast channels. To this day, some local people have been astounded that I'm happy with FiOS because of the trouble this single issue caused.

Very local political hot button.

I'm not sure why this didn't post before, but here is a link on PEG's in NJ, which are covered by the statewide franchise agreement.

There are clear instructions in there for the municipalities to follow. Also notice the fee paid based on gross subscriber revenues is 3.5%, whereas Comcast is about 2% down here. So that's a good deal for the municipality.

Anybody in the West Orange area not getting the West Orange PEG anymore? It was channel 45 but that is not showing up any more.

Funny you should say that. Was there something there before? I'm getting color bars on 34 also and I'm in a different VHO and there used to be something there.
